KMG Grinder; to paint or not

Maybe I'm just old school but never thought of needing to paint it (with anything other than the same steel powder that's on the wall behind it). It's a ruggedly built machine that will outlast my lifetime either way.

Unfortunately/fortunately I am going through chemo so fighting with FedEx was the last thing I had on my mind. Plus dis-assembling and painting was a good low energy project for the good days.

I do have pictures but they are to cool to show.

Hey David
I've got bandsaw envy.
Take some pic's and tell us about it.

Grinder and bench look good.

I used 883 etching primer. gray epoxy paint followed by a clear coat.

Got to love fed ex. They dropped my ef-48 grinder out of the side door of their truck onto the ground. Luckily no damage.

Painted mine last week. I had it since 04. It had been in storage out by Lubbock Texas that is relatively dry in humidity. I believe less than 20%. But the barn it was stored in had the roof blown off and sat exposed to weather over a lubbock winter. I was in las vegas and knew nothing about it until recently. So as soon as I got it here I rebuilt it and sanded off the rust and gave it a nice coat of paint. I didn't mask off the bearing pedestal's, I completely removed them and regreased them. Run's like a champ now. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Yeah, Jimmy. It was a bad winter (relative to West Texas) for the roof to blow off your storage barn. :D Definitely wetter than normal.

Ok just got home and snapped a few pics. I am going to make another order for a new contact wheel and will see if I can't get new stickers as well for the ones I had to peel off. The color match's all my miller welding equipment and heat treating oven. Can't have my colors clashing you know.

Jimmy im looking for a different style of locking arm like what you have . Where can I buy those, princess auto ??? . See mine is a small knob and really hard to tighten with the nerve damage in my hands.

Kelly

Do you need a male or female thread on your handle?
What size thread

They are called indexable clamping levers, or adjustable handle ball style.

I found a Canadian source near you...

Fastenal

If you need a male thread, the simplest solution is a long hex screw from the bulk bin at princess auto,
-grind off the hex head on your grinder - you can get an almost ball shape if you want it.
-heat it with a torch and bend it into an L shape.

Those plastic handles are nicer though, as you can set them -index- the handle to be at any position

Yeah I did mismatch it. It works fine, and next time I have a day off I plan on fixing that. I didn't realize that until I had it all put back together. Good catch.

Mine came that way on the grinder when I bought it. I do believe you can buy those types of knobs from littlemachineshop.com. Just make sure you get the right thread pattern. I know I bought new ones to rebuild the grizzly mini mill.
