I have enough for the KMG with everything but the motor, then I will be tapped out. I have a few 1/3 and 1/2 motors lying around and an 8" bench grinder with 1hp motor will any of these work for the KMG until i can get a different motor? Where can yo buy step pulleys cheap?

If you can set up the 1hp do it. 1/3 1/2hp will be too weak from my experience. For pulleys try http://www.mcmaster.com/#v-belt-pulleys/=quio46

These are usually aluminum which are ok to start with but if you can snag cast iron pulleys that are alot stronger and not prone to being out of round like the aluminum. Watch ebay closely I got some name brand iron pulley x2 for the price of one aluminum pulley 3 weeks ago. So there are deals if you can be vigilant.

Unless I am sorely mistaken, there's a lag time between the time you pay for a KMG and the time you receive it. Perhaps that lag time will be sufficient for you to get a real motor.

Seems powerful enough. Not sure if the drip proof design is the same as totally enclosed so you will have to keep an eye on it for metal dust shavings killing it. You will also most likely have to reverse the rotation of the motor. With that company I don't know if its easy to get to or not.

If you can wait, save up for a 3-phase motor, that way you can use a variable speed control. being able to slow down the belt is almost an absolute requirement.

got all my stuff here, great folks to work with.

Thor, everything else aside, congratulations on your KMG! I'm still on the waiting list for mine; with any luck they'll be back in stock next week or maybe the next. :D

Most people will disagree. I have a dc 3/4 DAYTON on my main blade grinder. I will not taper tangs due to power shortage however, cant stop with a 14 wheel. Have 1 hp dc Dayton I have taperd tangs with. Most everything has 2hp American made. One is seldom remorse from buying quality the first time.

I copied the Craigslist ad to show him what it's possible to find out there with a little luck (now I see that it's on eBay too). I'm not interested in that stuff myself

Having to cut that shaft down would put a dent in the "good deal" Just the same I think that setup could be a score for someone building a grinder. Between 1.5 hp motor and some decent pulleys with a good belt I bet you could spend $200 (plus shipping and maybe tax) easy.

I was kinda surprised to see that the seller says the motor is AC yet the speed can be controlled that variable speed module. I thought variable speed motors were either 3 phase 220 or DC.

Here up for sale is my Baldor Catalog No.M3554T, 1-1/2 HP AC Motor and Toshiba Inverter-Type Variable Speed Drive Module. 1-1/2 HP, 3/60/208-230/ 460V, 1,740 RPM AC Motor. 145T frame, 7/8" Diameter output shaft. Included is a 230v Toshiba Type VFS7-2015UP-(1) variable speed drive. 3/50-60/200-230V AC Input to drive. Great condition

That motor is three phase, either by the description they give, or by Baldor model number search.

I've purchased two different Baldor 2 hp 180V DC TEFC motors from ebay. One is mounted on my KMG grinder. Both of them were purchased for less than $130 each. DC controllers can be found on ebay to control these DC motors for about another $130 each.

Here is one for a sale now: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BALDOR-CDP3585-DC-MOTOR-180-V-2-HP-FR-145TC-/351004716532?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51b982edf4

Here's the Details from Baldor on this motor: http://www.baldor.com/products/detail.asp?1=1&catalog=CDP3585&product=DC+Motors&family=General+Purpose|vw_DCMotors_GeneralPurpose

DC motors provide almost constant torque throughout their speed range which makes them desirable to me. If you could grab this motor and a compatible controller on eBay, you may get away with a $3000 variable speed motor set-up for little more than $250.
