KMG Set UP

Guys, lets all stop posting links to sales in other places. This is a rules violation. I allow it on a limited basis if it is to show a typical unit or such, but if a thread starts being a bunch of links to "For Sale" ads, it will end up getting closed, and the posters will get a, "Cut it out" notice. Consider this a group "Cut it out" :)

Such posts are meant to be helpful, and we all want to be helpful.....but the problem is that many times the post isn't what the person needs or wants. Such well meaning posts can make a person spend hundreds of dollars wastefully.

Just to make that point clear, the motor/VFD shown in that craigslist add will not work unless your shop has 3 phase power. The VFD is a 3/50-60/200-230VAC unit. People often don't look at all the specs and buy the 3Ph to 3Ph VFDs. They are much cheaper than the 1Ph to 3Ph units. Some VFDs have a 1Ph/3Ph input and are great, but most for sale cheap don't. Caveat Emptor!

For those setting up a whole shop - If you want to run a shop full of tools on 3Ph, consider getting/making a phase convertor to maker 3Ph for the shop. You can run a few 3Ph outlets along the wall and hook up several tools. That way you can switch motors out on your tools and use the cheaper 3Ph motors. Any place you want VS , you can use a lower cost 3Ph-3Ph VFD.

Yes, a Baldor CDP3585 2HP,1750RPM,DC,145TC,3548P,TEFC,F1 motor will work with a KBMD-240D DC motor controller (KB Part number 9370). The controller should be mounted onto an auxillary heatsink to drive a 2 hp motor which is not difficult to obtain either.

A 230 VAC line that can handle 16 amps would be needed in the work area to provide power to the controller.

The controller should have a 0.01 ohm Plug-In Horsepower resistor

Locating a used/new in box dc motor is the way to go in my opionion. No phase converters to worry about, and you'll get constant torque though out the variable speed range.

Good luck.

Take your time, getting the motor and pulleys together. Buy the cast iron pulleys the aluminum units are pretty much junk. There is no substitute for horse power, none. I run a 3 hp with pulleys on one KMG and a 2 horse power with pulleys on the other. Both have the six inch drive wheel which pushes them along @ 5400 sfm. You've taken the time to get the KMG, which is a fine machine, take your time on finishing it out.

Thanks Fred, one of my next investments after I get the keg set up is a bubble jig.
