KMG workrest

I can't seem to get that link to work. It takes me to the right website, but the price listed is $0.00. What gives? Is he out of stock at the present time?

This work rest for my mobile KMG was made using a miter box saw extension table. It moves in and out up and down as well as tilts. Very handy.

I actually bought a MAP arm from a friend, one he never used, and although I use it occasionally I cant really recommend to others to buy one.

I completely agree with you. I bought one because I was new and impressionable; would never recommend one. Take a look at the Wilmont grinder work rest; looks interesting.

Where is '71 Commando, he's done a couple mods.

Brett Mathews who makes the Esteem grinder also makes a fantastic adjustable work rest for the KMG if that's what you're looking for. It is also much less expensive than the MAP arm.

Hope that helps,
Tom

In my opinion most of the work rests you see on all grinders are too short. I made mine 18" long out of 1/4 " aluminum I also use an aluminum platen. I have made a magnetic jig to hold the blade it is adjustable to what ever angle is needed. It works sweet.

The first modification was a cast iron tool rest scavenged from an old table saw top. I got tired of the drag from the workpiece galling on the steel tool rest so I made a new one, it is also adjustable for incline angle although I haven't moved it since I made it.
The next modificataion was a vertical toolrest for squaring edges. Mine is simple, doesn't have any cutouts for small wheels but can be used with any attachment if you are careful. I feel like Rob should make these because EVERYONE would buy one.
Daizee, could you post the pics?

Rob told me quite a few years back that he would rather not sell a tool rest at all.

A tool rest can be very dangerous to somebody who is careless and/or doesn't understand pinch points.

Burr King quit making the 960 Knife maker's grinder for several years because some bozo had a blade get pinched between the belt/tool rest, and then it launched out into his gut. He then tried to sue Burr King and True Grit (they sold him the grinder).

His fault? Of course! 100%!!! Doesn't change the fact he made the mess that he did.

So my point is, I don't expect Rob to make a fancy tool rest any time soon. ;)

All that said--- I have several tool rests for my grinders, and there isn't one that I haven't modified.

I agree with TASelf (Tom), take a look at the one Brett Matthews is making for his Esteem grinder... it's simple and very adjustable!!! Those are the two key elements to a tool rest, IMHO. Adjustable locking levers are a huge plus on a tool rest as well! :)

Nathan the machinist mentioned that he would be making a kmg toolrest. I haven't heard any further details but it would likely be very good. Maybe he will chime in.

An articulating work rest for the KMG is one of the next projects on the list. These things take time though. I'll probably have something mid-next year.
