 Just tonight , I noticed on an auction site , that a knife BOX only ( for a Cold Steel Recon 1 ) sold for nearly $60 total with shipping . The ad was pretty clear that it was for a BOX , but people often do not read carefully .

It got me thinking about all those knife boxes I got sitting around , collecting dust .

Are they worth the trouble of keeping , or better to just trash or sell for big $$$ at auction ?

I'm sure they add value, probably more for collectors. I usually keep mine until I decide I like the knife, then I throw it away or sell it with the knife.

I like to keep the box with the receipt in it ( I buy in stores ) so I remember when I got it and what model if I forget and it's not marked.
If I buy a quality knife I keep it ,and since Victorinox and Buck knives have been go-to brands in my family and are kind of special to me I like to keep those boxes / packages especially.

Perhaps he's not a fraud. At gun shows, gun boxes for Glock models, as well as for older handguns, such as COLTS and RUGERS and SMITH & WESSON often sell for up to $100.

Sell it and find out if you don't need it. I would, I'm not really a collector. Some collectors buy online and receive a damaged box that bugs the living $#!+ out of them and want one in excellent condition. Many of them have deep pockets as well.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If the add was clear about it just being the box...well, if someone doesn't read before they buy, its their own fault!

So you're fine screwing other people over too like that JO selling a box? He knows someone's gonna click first and read last. The "Box" is in the ad so he can't be prosecuted for fraud, but he is still a dirt bag.

Can't blame the seller in that situation, for whatever reason a lot of people are willing to buy empty boxes. It's surprisingly common to see them for sale.

If a person is buying something off of an auction site and they aren't spending the time to take a damned close look at what they are buying then they have no one to blame but themselves.

I keep my boxes because even a lot of my “keepers” can become sold knives as I always like to try new things and slim down my collection. Boxes always seem to add a little value or make selling a used knife a little easier.

save them, it's always a good thing when a second hand knife comes with a box.

don't be a sadboy trying to sell a box only.

I tend to keep the boxes as well. I store the knives in em' if they aren't regularly carried. The ones in my rotation sit on top of theirs looking pretty making my decision of which one to carry that day easier, haha.

I keep em all. For production blades, they can help with the appeal when selling eventually and it just seems classier to get a used knife in the original box instead of a sandwich baggie. Most of my customs and limited stuff just came in padded knife-tacos, which are fairly versatile and easy to store, so I hang on to those as well. I never considered selling just boxes though, hmmm.

I make little hats out of them for pictures with family and friends. I hope to open a boutique someday.

I keep them as they Re fairly small and don’t take up much space. And I only have 25 or so.

Generally once a knife is used a lot and I am sure I will never sell it, I toss the box. I wouldn’t bother to be a douche and sell a box.

You can buy a Cold Steel Recon for 20 or 30 dollars more. With the box. So, yes someone didn't read well.
I’ve tried to come up with scenarios where someone may buy and “empty box”. Here is one, let me know if it is plausible. If you live in a locale where the knife is illegal and sellers are breaking the law shipping it to you (ie. NY city), you can legally sell them and “empty box”. That package may contain “additional contents” when it arrives on your doorstep. Of course, both buyer and seller would be aware of the “arrangement”, but there is no paper trail for prosecution.

The selling of empty boxes is really common and not fraudulent at all (I'm sure there are exceptions) - as others have mentioned some folks REALLY want a minty box and collector's can get a bit insane. Weirder to me is you can find TONS of premium brand boxes & bags online, like a Nordstrom's shopping bag for example. I guess some folks also like the supposed status that comes with a premium shopping bag or something.

Dang, Gucci shoe boxes collect a decent premium... maybe I should sell a few.

Oh, yeah I'm a keeper btw.

Another theory I have is that people that sell knock-offs of premium brands package them with authentic boxes to pass them off as genuine.
