Recommendation? Knife boxes : save , toss , or sell ( box only) ?

Yeah, sadly I am sure that is true. Probably way more common with clothes/shoes.
If I remember correctly, people used to be able to spot a fake Spydercos by the box. I’m not sure if that is still the case though.

I am not sure as to why some of you are so negative about selling or buying a box. When I buy a knife and it does not have a box I take that into account when I make the offer. It makes selling the knife easier and also helps when buying a knife.
Expensive items hold their value better, I'll give you some examples, a box for a Rolex President goes for $400 and does add value to the watch, Blue boxes from Tiffany's add cache to a gift and are bought and sold everyday. Antique toys are worth much more if they have the original box etc. Boxes from expensive or antique items are more easily sold and boxes from these items have their own value.
I know that I am more comfortable when an item has a box. I have bought boxes in the past for knives that I own and even one sent to me from Italy (Lionsteel) . If I have forgotten to list it as with
" box and papers included" most buyers will ask specifically if I have the box and papers, I do the same. On the occasion that I buy a knife without a box I always try to hunt down the box for it.
The nasty comments made about the people buying or selling a box are inappropriate. As the OP wrote the listing said BOX ONLY. The people selling the boxes are doing a service for the people that need them.

If the box is a fake it does not necessarily mean that the knife is a fake. Their have been two occasions that the seller asked me if I want a box from a different knife or that the box had no sticker on it (fake) and I would either say yes or no.

Hmmm. I’m sure you did your due diligence and the knife was priced accordingly.

I try very hard to keep all knife boxes.

When I buy off a forum, I really prefer to have the box included too.

So you're fine screwing other people over too like that JO selling a box? He knows someone's gonna click first and read last. The "Box" is in the ad so he can't be prosecuted for fraud, but he is still a dirt bag.
Did I say I was OK with it ? Besides , I've seen boxes sold quite a few times but for lots less . I do believe that some people do want to buy the box only . Maybe collectors that just want a replacement box ? Never seen one go for $60 before . The site and paypal procedures would allow the buyer to request arbitration if they dispute the sale . Most established sellers do not want a negative rating on their record .

Another theory I have is that people that sell knock-offs of premium brands package them with authentic boxes to pass them off as genuine.

This is by far the most plausible explanations in this thread of buying empty boxes. I know some sellers of wine (certainly not here) buy empty bottles of expensive wine/liquor.

lets see. I lost the factory box of my new hinderer xm-18 so when it comes to selling I have to price it at $280. Would price it at $300 had I had the box.

Now I spend $40 to buy a new box so that I can sell the knife at $300.

Oops! What I just did?

I only keep boxes for knives I have not used yet. For example, I recently got a Spyderco Khalsa and started carrying it immediately and tossed the box. But, several knives I have bought didn't come with boxes and instead had pouches. Eh, anyway, I keep the pouches, and the boxes for anything I have not used, or the boxes for more expensive knives regardless. No interest in selling them though.

I keep the boxes, they don't take up all that much space, and if I decide to sell anything (ha, fat chance) I can send them out in their original boxes. I wouldn't sell an empty box, if anything should I for example lose a knife and have no use for the box anymore, I'd first ask if anybody wants it and can have it for free / shipping expense.

I'm only interested in the boxes. It pisses me off when I have to buy the knife too. That junk just makes that sweet, sweet cardboard more expensive.

Sometimes I'll sell off the knife after buying a nice box. Other times I just toss them.

Not to mention the additional unnecessary weight making shipping more expensive!

You may be part CAT ! :p

I have all my boxes for my knives, along with all the paperwork and even the silica packet that was in the box. If I decide to sell a knife one day it goes along.

Once again, SS wins the thread!!

If your Hinderer is a Bowie, I’ll take it at $280 provided the peanuts are included.

I keep my boxes. I don’t know why.
