Knife brands to stay away from

Surprised no one has mentioned Dork Ops :D

Exactly my point! They are not, at all, my cup of tea, but they are among, if not the best in what they do.

If someone wants an uber tactical thing with lots of writing on the blade and all kind of pointy bits....its the brand I suggest. That or Brous Blades. Wouldn't carry either brand on a bet, but we are supposed to be helping people get what THEY want....not what WE want.

Avoid any knife with a gun manufacturer's name on it. They just license out their names and 95% of the time they are the worst or the worst Chinese shit. S&W is particularly bad.

I was gifted an S&W knife by a friend and it was all I could do not to show my disdain at that POS when I opened it. Now, there are exceptions. H&K Benchmades come to mind.

After the grip inserts peeled off the handle and a piece of the knife decided to detach itself from the rest of the knife, my first S&W knife turned into my last.

Gerber, Buck, SOG, Frost, Smith & Wesson, Colt, Uzi, Dark Ops, HTM/Darrel Ralph knives, and GET READY FOR IT... EMERSON.

Sorry, but in my experience of owning a lot (more than I care to say) of Emerson Knives I have concluded that they are made with horrendous quality and are severely overpriced. My $30.00 Ontario Rat 1's are built better than them.

Quartermaster actually makes some amazing quality knives. The QTR-6 that I used to own was built tougher than any Strider, or CRK I've ever had. I have never had any experience with the quality of Mantis but everyone hates them because a long time ago the owner Jared West told all of his followers to spam bladeforums with Mantis ads. Never held one of their knives so I can't comment on quality but there are a couple of them which I probably wouldn't mind owning.

Everybody talks brands, but I want to talk metal. I have had Kershaw, Spyderco, and others only to be disappointed in the resharpen frequency. How about a good pocket knife with a metal that is really high end regardless of the cost. Any made?

This thread has no where to go but down. :thumbdn: :( :thumbdn:

Every knife has got it's market or it wouldn't be made.

The question itself begs negative feedback. :(

We should be discussing the positive attributes of knives and knife makers,

...not opening a free for all to post negative comments.

Tenants like:

"Buy from reputable knife makers or dealers."

And.

"A smart buyer gets what he pays for."

Are rules to heed when knife shopping.

Ruko, the gerber bear grylls line up, name brand gun company's Chinese licensed garbage. There's a bunch more but come down to the person buying it, and if they feel it'll hold up to their usage.

The Muela made Rukos are decent for the money.

:mad:Thats a lot of kittens, you sick F***:D:D:D

Oh and to further explain to nurodude my reasoning for my hatred towards the word metal in the context of blade steel:

"Metal" has a different connotation. Its as if you are implying that knives are also made out of copper, zinc, brass, etc.
"Steel" is currently BY FAR the most prevalent "metal" used in the making of blades. So, the word "metal" cant be swapped into the place of "steel" and still have the same meaning, but "steel" can be used instead of, and is more descriptive than, the word "metal" when describing an alloy used in a particular knife, considering the fact that most knives are made out of steel, and you dont seem to be including titanium dive knives in your post ;)

Plus theres the very real effect it has on the kitten population:D

I don't think listing any certain brand is fair given the huge assortment from each manufacturer. The only way I would justify telling you to stay away from a brand is the price point you are looking at and how you are going to use it. Some $30 knives will last for years and some may last for months. There are too many options out there to sweep an entire brand name under the rug. Heck, even the Bear Grylls line from Gerber has a gem thrown in there from time to time (although that is based on online reviews and not from my own personal experience). Set your price point and exhaust all your options and resources before deciding on a knife and you'll be fine regardless of the brand.

Did you spend more than $50 on them? Or are you just generalizing a few companies because their Aus8 didn't meet your expectations?

LMAO! Kill them kittehs...

Good show sir. Got a big laugh from me

As for the rest of this argument, I'm staying the hell out of it. There's a whole lot of hate out there for a whole lot of brands. Some justified, some not. I know what I would avoid, but I don't need to advertise it.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

For the love of kittens I hope leghog was referring to this kind of metal.
