So this package arrived yesterday. I was not expecting it, but what a nice surprise. It feels perfect in hand, and cuts like a great knife should. Yeah...I still need to remove some epoxy, but it was a rush job;)

No more words, just photos...

Thanks richard j, you rock!

Looks great Ken, what is the handle made of? Love the shape and the color. Congratulations!

Blessings,

Omar

Richards knives are so beautiful! They look so practical too with the straight cutting edge. I've been a fan for a little while now. ;)

I love the handle too.

I want to know how the knife performs.

I'm still hoping I can talk him into making me a carving knife! :D

The handle is dyed Oregon maple burl polished and waxed.

The knife performs nicely. It's small, and makes most cutting chores small as well;)

That wood is absolutely amazing. You did a fantastic job on it. Richard sent me pics of the naked blade a while back and I was really anxious to see the finished knife. Wow. You guys really nailed it.

Thanks. I'm really happy with it.

I need to take some more photos. I cleaned off the left over epoxy, applied a second coat of wax and polished the tang to a bright finish. Subtle, but better.

It rode with me (neck configuration) on a bike ride with my boys (about 90 minutes to the coffee shop and back). It rode comfortably the whole way.

It also helped my boy make several para cord bracelets today (his business is booming;)). It zips through 550 like butter and leaves a nice square end.

Good stuff. That is one of the things I love about that grind. Clean, square cuts. I know that other grinds will work too but I can't keep them sharp as easily.

Wow, I would have thought it was acrylic or that pool cue inlay stuff or something else. I'm even more impressed now. The ergos remind me of the Perrin Street Beat.

i still have a project i need to get done for a member here that is an emt. i'm modding a cold steel voyager for him which i'm going to try my best to work on this week if i can use my buddys mill. if i get it done i'll see about your carving knife.

there is a member coming up i hope this coming weekend. if i can get him to help me to move my equipment outside i'll see if i can get your carving knife made or at least rough ground. i'm not allowed to lift anything heavy so until i get put back together and healed back up again, its going to be next year before i can move stuff around by myself.

ken, if you get a chance, see what its like to wear the necker i made for mack and let me know what its like. if i make any more like that i might want to skeletonize the handle to make it lighter. the pictures i have of it kind of suck so if you get a chance to take any shots of it, can you post some pictures? i bet it would look good with some of that burl on it :D (hint) that is if mack wants it done and you want to do it :D)

I'd love to put a handle on that for him. I'm out of wood scraps at the moment though.

I need a pile of nice scraps for occasions such as this.

I did however build the scales for that razor. I'm not sure how far in going to take them considering how easily they will just scratch up. I'd be happy to use them as they are now.

Good looking knife! :D initial poor eyeballing, I thought it possibly be a large stabby straight razor.

What's steel & how was it heat treated?

bluntcut, the steel is 1075 with my own heat treat. i partially ground the blade and then did the heat treat before doing the final grind. i made it real thin since i knew unit liked razors so well. i was going to take it thinner but i figured .024 was thin enough. i did leave it a little thicker at the very edge but unit can thin it down the rest of the way if he wants since it is not very wide (3/64" maybe).

i really like how it looks with the lexan. i should have sent you some wood scraps that i have but i never thought to. maybe i'll send you a box with a few pieces and some coffee. i'll send you the 2 kydex strips that would have worked on the razor aslo.

have you tried it out yet?

No, I still need to hone it. I have been really busy lately helping my son with his para cord business. The orders are pouring in (good for him, bad for my discretionary time).

I will probably hone it in the next day or two and test shave it before sending it on.

Ah man, I was just ribbin ya.

I gotta say, you guys are making some really sweet stuff though. A very good collaboration indeed. The straight looks wicked!

You sure chose a super tough steel. I've a condor 12" 1075 thin blade, my toughest knife. Your knife profile & geometry look like a forever slicer & cardboard shredder:thumbup:

Is it? I've used plenty of 1095 and some 1084. I think I've had some 1055 that was called something else, maybe a Cold Steel machete or something I can't remember, but I don't think I've ever tried 1075.

you would be amazed at what can be done with simple carbon steel like 1075 with a good heat treat. i had a member say a knife i made for him held up better than some of his "super steel" knives. i sent a knife (k II) out on a private passaround and unit had the chance to check it out. here is the link to the vid he made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q_eMwRaHYg

if you go to my website, you can see some pictures of a tree i cut down with it but it has a reddish phenolic handle in the pictures. the other knife with the neoprene handle was made from some mystery steel that was supposed to be 1075 but it was not.

several years back i gave noss a knife i made to test out (but not destroy) and he said he cut a bunch of rope until he got tired of cutting and it still shaved. the last time i talked to him he said he has yet to sharpen it.

back in 94, i made a buddy a knife and so far he has skinned 15 deer with it and it still shaves.

it will have to go to cj65 since mack makes it by his place often. i'm sure he will like to see macks knife and the razor.
i bet some checkering would look bad on the lexan and give it a better grip. it would also hide scratches. i might try experimenting with glass beading lexan with a piece of window screen covering it to give it a pattern.
