Sometimes you have to have the knives in your possession to understand what you've got in a variety of blade and knife styles. This is especially so if a show or store isn't around the corner.
With custom makes, you wind up seeing something that's immediately available in limited quantity and for a limited time. So folks wind up going for it just to experience what looked so tantalizing on a dealer's website.
Time passes and you get to refine what it is you really like and then strive towards that particular knife or group of knives.
I would have to classify myself as an accumulator/user. I buy knives just because I like them, but I do tend to use most of them. As I start getting more into Mastersmith bowies, that using part is likely to change.
