Knife concept

The pommel is supposed to be used for crushing or window breaking aka"tactical aplicantions"

This is some more options we are getting results here feel free to make critical comments to help improve design

Except for A, they look hugely blade heavy. I like the look of the first one, though, with the blade that far down below the handle and a nice pointy tip.

Yea these are just concepts and I never was much for art maybe a little harder and some tools (protracter ext.) I'm thinking one of the recurve ones il try and draw them neater and neater. Just note the drawings are shorter than two inches each

Ah we're lookin a little better here what do you guys think for more "tactical" and out door use

You've designed a "tactical" knife there. It would probably be good for stabbing someone, and crushing their skulls with. The blade design and corresponding balance wouldn't make it very effective for outdoor use.

Fighting knives should have the weight balanced closer to your index finger so it will move as an extension of your hand without effort.

Outdoors & wilderness survival knives need to have the weight more at the middle or front 1/3rd of the blade so you can chop and slice easily without wasting energy and tiring your hands. Designing a blade edge that is lower than the grip helps in control when doing fieldwork. Easier to use for food prep and in preparing game as well.

I understand that it is fun to design knives, but you really can't make a knife optimized for both fighting (tactical) and outdoors work since the balance will be different on each.

You will ultimately need to ask yourself whether you really plan on stabbing a lot of people, or will you more likely be using it to collect materials to make camp, build a fire and prepare food with?

Well maybe not even people but if you go boar hunting or anything where your personal safety is at risk from wildlife or people... Take kabar for chance it means kill bear and it's a combat knife but I use it out side more so than I kill things with it. Great knife exception able out doors I guess good combat knife. I'm trying to get the same 50/50 ratio going so it is modest at both givin some weeknesses and issues. Bear grylls survival knife(I personaly don't like it ) gives sort of a combat feel and kinda sucks for survival so I'm trying to switch that basically. Good out door ok fighter... Cool design tho hey

Well thank you all for the help I love the newer design I have. I use knives quite frequently in the kitchen and carving, some larger ones for wood splitting. I think this one will fill the books for as many options possible out of the four I had and it changed a lot from what it was I will get an estimate if not to pricy I will post a picture of the completed model. Thank you again I hope I'm not the only one who loves the design

As a note, to improve your drawings make them larger, even full size. That wil make the small shakes and imperfectiosn from your handswork less siginificant int he overall look of the drawing.

(I do design work for a living if you're wondering... :D)

Wrong. The KaBar name (and bear story) predate the KaBar combat knife by decades.

Yea it wasn't what we think of kabar but what I ment was if I where to need it I know it's there and ready

I really think it would help your design if you stepped back, took a breath, and thought about what you really expect the knife you are designing to do. That's precisely what knife good designers do. They don't just draw stuff that looks cool.

If I understand you, you are looking to create 50% stabber-killer/50% "outdoorsy"? It seems to me that the chances of needing to kill something with a knife while camping are far less than 50%. And stabber-killer design is entirely different than outdoorsy design, as CWL described. So, in the end your 50/50 mix ends up 50 apple and 50 black olive. That 50 stabber-killer is making a mess of things.

I would imagine the odds of needing to stab-kill with a knife while camping are small...1-2% tops? That's all you need.

Your KaBar reference is perfect. The knife that killed that "bar" and inspired the name looked quite a bit like this...

Just a simple outdoors knife. No jimping or skull crushers or blood grooves in sight.

By the way...I take ti those two circles at the base of the blade on your designs....those are holes so you can lash your knife onto a pole and make a spear?

Yea or tie a d lanyard to it if you wanted I am trying to design a knife so my friend Brian can make and sell them at his shop

If you are seriously trying to create a "retail" knife, you need to consider the applications beyond how it looks on paper.

I have to disagree! If you want to sell a bunch of knives you don't have to care about functionality at all. Stick a bunch of extraneous pointy bits on it, paint it black, and give it an awesome name like Tac Survival System.

Actually, your initial design would probably sell like hotcakes with the right name.

Yes, you are right.
