Knife Costs?

Wow. A guy asks a question!
Thanks, Brett, and all who responded with a kind or a good response. I'm really trying to decide on which knives to keep and which to sell. This might be my last Post. Not all at once now---Yeah!!

How about keeping the ones that make you feel good every time you look at them or pick them up!

It's funny you say that. That's pretty much my way of determining which ones i keep.. the ones I associate with a friend or a positive experience, I tend to keep. I guess I'm sentimental guy..:o

Lycosa I was just razzing a bit.

For my real answer, I also think the same thing from time to time. ;) At one time I was so into that way of thinking I sold the better half of my higher dollar knives. I went back to that good old Caly 3 and Mili. Them models are what caused my madness. It was good for a few days, then BAM! I do love them Spydies, it just I missed my hand ground XM, my Lamberts, the Large Micarta Sebbie. The money was not really the issue, it was just why spend so much for something that cuts "stuff?" In fact my Caly 3 could out cut them "others" on cardboard, and for me that is 50% of what I ever NEED to cut.

Long story short.......... if they make you happy and you do not have a pressing NEED for the cash. Keep them!

Is one better than the other in this pic?

I don't think so. They both have tasks they are better at. As, I sure would hate to try and cut a loose thread off my three month old's shirt with that RC. And sure would hate to try to use that to.............. smash bricks? (I don't know what the hell I NEED it for?) What I do know is in makes me smile when I pull her and cut with it! :D

I am a knife knut! Thats why I need it. ;)

dude, that strider is SWEET!!!! I ALMOST bought one a year or so ago. Kind of wish I did...:(

If you can afford nicer, more expensive knives go for it. Anything to broaden the variety and shopping options is good by me.

At this point in my hobby with knives, I wonder, for example, why did I buy that $400. folder when my $25. folder can hold it's own?

I never wonder this........I'm happily married so I have someone else to point this out to me. :D

Perspective....just for the record...

$375 watch ( Luminox Quadrum )

Nice post John. That's what it's all about.

Kind regards,

I buy what appeals to ME. My taste in knives has gotten a bit more expensive too. I appreciate the craftmandshi that went into making said custom knife. I also enjoy the interaction with the knife makers as well. It makes for a wonderfully incredible experiece. The joy for me is in carrying and using this amazing piece of craftmanship. To each his own. Buy what YOU like!!! I will continue to buy the knifes that I like. Have fun in try hunt got the next knife That I am after.

If you don't feel that you are getting good value for the $400.00 you spent on that folder then maybe you did get caught up in around all the great recommendations that knife got. I hesitate to call it hype, because that has a negative connotation.

We knife knuts will buy knives from $10. to $1,000. and more. At this point in my hobby with knives, I wonder, for example, why did I buy that $400. folder when my $25. folder can hold it's own? I wonder if I was taken by all the Hype?

Buy what you like if you can afford it(and sometimes if you can't!:)).
If you're unable to pay rent or eat enough food because of buying expensive knives, THEN it's a problem.
I'm sure your $25 knife can't really hold a candle to your $400 knife in many respects; if not, THEN you got ripped off by $375.
I still kinda like my Colt AR-15k(a $40 knife), but my Chinnok 3 IS far superior in every way which counts(edge retention, toughness, strength of lock, comfort on thrusts into hard materials, ergonomics, blade-play), so it IS worth more.

There are many great knives below the 100 dollar line. Most of my favorite knives, regardless of price, cost less than 100 dollar (in the USA, Europe is more expensive).

I buy more expensive knives because I like them, not because they are better.

The knives I bought in 2008:

Byrd Crossbill* , Pelican (sadly discontinued, but I found one) and Meadowlark: Solid lock up, no blade play. Very smooth opening and excellent fit and finish. I tested the locks (spine taps and one firm whack) and used the Crossbill and Meadowlark a lot. The steel could be better but this was not really noticeable while using the knives. Great knives regardless of price.

*The first one I got, about two years ago, does have significant blade play but because it works fine I never bothered to return it.

Spyderco Endura (FRN, VG-10): If I could own only one knife… (I still use it’s predecessor with AUS8 steel and that knife works beautifully).

Benchmade Mini Griptilian: also a great knife.

I just ordered a more expensive knife, but that is because I want it for my collection, not because I believe it is better.

we spend that much because we are obsessed

everybody got to have something to spend their money on, if i go out less i can buy more knives fer example

i also compare it to art, and many customs actually are art

At a certain price point I feel its down to looks and name. Because at some point youhave reached the top of the performance curve. If I spend $500 on a folder it had better be darned nice looking because I have $100-200 knives that will do everything they will do and probably better.

perhaps the same , but how could they do it better? please explain.

Exactly! When I buy a knife, the harmony of a good design, along with good materials and construction, combines to produce an item that is greater than the sum of it's parts.

I have $30 Byrd knives that I deem as excellent, right next to custom Buck knives and high end Spyderco blades. What they all have in common, is that they please me with their value and build.
