Hey guys,

My brother just recently lost his Spyderco Temperance 2 which he was planning on carrying in his go bag(im not sure what that is).

His specs are:

under $200
4 to 5" blade
Plain edge
durable
Camping/Survival...not so much fighting.

The knives that I have come up with so far are:

Tops BOB knife
esee Laser strike
esee 4(handle tends to be a little short for my hands)
DPX Heft
TOPS Cuma
BRK Bravo1

He is short on time(deploys Soonish). no time for a custom unless there is stock.
Also he would like the sheath to be Moly compatible/kydex/etc. not the end of the world.

Any knives yall think would fit the bill cheaper then $200 would be great.

Thanks guys!

Alex

Its been too long since iv been on this forum!

Look at beckers.

Esee 3 or 4 with the aftermarket grips that extend around the pommel. The 3 is great when paired with some aftermarket kydex and lighter and easier to carry after having carried both around the woods.

I also forgot the master hunter in VG1 from cold steel.

Coot...wow those grips are bad ass. that makes me regret having sold my esee 4. that has been passed along!

the F1 has also been passed on.

Do yall feel like the beckers have really overly larger handles? i have never held them in person but the handles on them look overly large to me. (talking about the BK2 and 3 with the big round handles)

He was looking at the esee 5 but i had to remind him that that knife is 1lb with 1/4 inch steel. not a easy to carry or good cutting knife. more like a sharpened prybar.

Thanks guys!

Alex

I have a DPX HEFT 4 and that thing is great. The bottle opener and wire stripper jimping are a little cheesy. But the Niolox steel is amazing and I baton small logs with that blade and have yet to chip it. The blade is full tang and super thick. You can take apart the handles and put matches or whatever you want in there

Has anyone got experience with the TOPS Hog? that seems to have caught his eye. That USMC Bravo 1 is a damn sharp looking knife.

+1 on the ESEE 4 and Dpx ideas. I think the Tops HOG looks real appealing too, there aren't many reviews last I looked, but it looks like a nice design.

Maybe worth looking at the for sale threads for Busse/Swamp Rat/Scrap Yard blades and see if something appeals to you. They are bomb proof blades...and almost Marine proof! ;) :D

Isn't the ESEE 5 intended to be used for cutting your way out of a crashed aircraft? I know I read it somewhere, but it would take me 45 minutes to find a source.....

Ontario 499 "Jet Pilot Survival Knife"
Mil Spec.
Has history of use by pilots of all types military aircraft.
Around $50 give or take.

I can tell you from personal experience the HOG is a perfect knife for that. I've actually bent mine and bent it back, no breakage. Easy to maintain and can get razor sharp. I wrapped a portion of the handle in tennis tape

Spyderco Aqua Salt. SERE instructors carry them for a reason. $107 on Amazon.

ESEE 4 would be my bet, as it has versatile sheath that can be also altered depending on taste. And it's good overall knife for utility and camping. If for camping only, I would choose TOPS BoB but it has little less versatile sheath.

+1 on Aqua Salt

First knife that crossed my mind reading the title

No need for maintenance, tougher than it looks, keeps cutting and cutting, not excessively big, not overly expensive, relatively lightweight

non reflective, non obtrusive, easy to carry and use without drawing much attention

Dude go with the F1. It was first designed for pilots so it's got added cool factor for him. Also an awesome knife.
