knife for a lady

So I have a lady friend who is going to be starting college this September. Last year I got her a CRKT Rollock for her b-day. She loved it, as it was her first knife, and grew very attached to it. Now it has been stolen. She wants a new knife to take to college, and I'm having trouble deciding what to get her.
The primary role of this knife will be for self defense. That said, quick deployment is a must. Knife should look sexy, and only have serrations if it adds to the overal sexiness. I was thinking of a BM mini grip w/ pretty scales. I would like to keep the price under $80 seeing as I'm just a poor sales clerk and we're not dating.
Thanks.

Stuck in best friend hell huh? Been there a few times myself and all the gift buying in the world doesn't get you out of it :p

Having said that, I reckon the Spyderco Native is a cool looking blade that fits form to function and it rates hightly as an SD knife when the topic is discussed.

For a small knife (the rollock's pretty li'l), it doesn't get much sexier than the Spyderco cricket. The reverse-S blade will make it cut like a bigger knife for SD, too. And I've never known a woman not to like the cricket. And it deploys extremely easily with a "spyder-drop" (hold the opening hole and snap the handle down into your palm; Danielle does this without even thinking).

As a bonus, it carries really easily in a bra--it's really thin (especially the SS-handled version), and there are no poky edges. Believe me, the extra carriability really comes in handy for women, who often don't have pockets to work with.

And it looks great in plainedge. :D

New Graham sells the SS version for $40.56.

careful... college dormitories have very strict knife and weapon policies. self defense with a knife can also bring up very problematic legal repercussions. Rule of thumb for self defense gifts... Guns for sport, Knife as tool, Mace as defense.

1: Not even trying to go there. Of all the ladies on my list, she is not one of them because I rather just be friends.
2: I think she may have trouble with the native. The lines are not really what she wants, and she hasn't had a normal pocket knife before. (I tried to show her how to flick open a knife in reverse grip. ...she wasn't getting it to say the least.)
3: The cricket does sound pretty cool with the 'fits nicely in a bra' concept. But I think she wants something larger. She was commenting a few weeks ago about wanting another, larger, folding knife. So I think now is the time to step up for that.
The Kershaw Vapor comes to mind. That looks pretty sleak. I still think I want to get her something a bit nicer.
4: F*** the college rules. She knows better than to pull it out wherever, and she's not (too) into activities that would draw notice from the authorities.
Thanks for the replies, Keep 'em coming.

Kershaw Rainbow Leek.

Or your first choice, the excellent BM Mini-Griptilian.

my wife has been carrying a mini BM stryker plain edge for a while now(almost 2 yrs), i got her a MT mini SOCOM elite plain edge for her b-day, and she really likes it, likes it much better than the stryker for sure. fits her hand well/not too large/too small, she says its perfect.

i bet she'd luv that Leek!
another idea, if she'd like something bigger than the Cricket, you might get her the blue Dodo instead. it's got a great full-sized handle, a legal-sized blade that will cut someone's throat out with one swipe, and it's got a cool lock she could play with.

but if size really matters to her, i think that Leek is great.

It's easy to say... "f*ck the college rules", but I recalled a buddy in ROTC kept a few blades in his footlocker. He took it out only to put in his rucksack, or to stick in his pocket... his roommate turned his butt in and he got expelled and lost his ROTC scholarship...

I'm not saying she should not have a blade... if I were in your shoes, I'd feel the world 'a guilt if she got expelled for something I gave her... If that don't bother your conscience, then by all means, go for it.

Couldn't agree more! The SS SE Cricket is The knife. Not to mention it can be carried not only in the bra but attached to the garters ;)

For what it's worth, my wife has the rainbow leek and the mini-grip (purple handles) and likes them both. Of the two, she prefers the mini-grip.

imo, save some more money and get her a small sebenza. Quality lasts, and you know she'll appreciate it.

Delica plus trainer.

After watching my oldest daughter fumble with openings etc.with her first one hander,I saw the wisdom of a trainer.

The blue Dodo is nice also, i love mine, but its bigger than a Delica with a much smaller blade.Would be a good choice if she has to have a smaller blade per rules.

I'm not big on pepperspray myself.Seems it always raining or windy where I live, plus my daughters spend alot of time in gym shorts and pj pants without pockets.A thin knife rides nice in the waistband, can't figure out where they would carry a can of spray.

That plus the fact its a tool for low threats and NOT a substitute for a knife or gun when faced with high threats.

I'd go with Maximus Otter on this one, the Leek in rainbow is one sweet lookin' tool.

And it don't hurt that it's super quick too.

My experience with the assisted opening knives and ladies is not that great. My wife loved the looks of the Chive when I bought it but when she went to use it she didn't like the assisted opening at all. She thought it was an 'obstruction to control' of the blade. Once I took the knife apart and removed the torsion bar she has been fine with it ever since.

She has carried a Cold Steel Mini Pal on her key ring for years and loves that too.

Serrated cricket - great slasher, she could gut a bad guy like a fish.
Also so small that waistband, bra, necklace or money clip carry is very easy.
my wife loves her's for her evening walks.
you can't stab with it though.

Never handled it in real life but I did see it sitting in a case once and it screamed lady knife to me: The Ed van Hoy snaplock by CRKT.
