knife for a lady

My 13-year old son has a Heat, and it seems to fit his hand well.

I should add that the flipper on the Heat is IMHO easier to operate than thumbstuds I've encountered on other assisted opening knives.

My Rainbow Leek came with the tip-down clip, but it has screw holes so I can reverse it if I want. And you don't have to worry about it opening accidentally. There's a lock near the tip that prevents the blade from opening, and it's adjustable in case it ever loosens. From what I understand, the Axis lock is one of the most secure locks, so you may want to consider a Benchmade with the Axis lock. As much as I hate the idea of using liner locks in a fighting knife, I have to admit that the framelock on my Leek is as strong as anything I've seen. (Not as it is when it opens, but after I push it the rest of the way into place.) It passes the pressure and spine wack tests without flinching, and I can't see anything other than extreme pressure causing the lock to fail.

That being said, knives are fun to carry around and can be the most useful thing on your person, but I wouldn't want a female friend of mine to rely on one for self-defence unless she's been trained in its use. Too much chance that it would be taken away and used against her. I'd recommend a small can of pepper spray (fits on a keychain, is as small as a knife, has greater range, and is ostensibly a dog repellant), as well as a whistle.

I had a Mini-Grip that I gave to my sister after I showed it to her and she said "cool." I found it really easy to carry during the time that I had it. For self-defense (and keep in mind I've never found myself in a position to need to use a knife this way, so I'm just basing this on my obsessive-compulsive, neurotic, overactive imagination) I think I'd want a knife in my waistband or pocket where it'd probably be easier to get to. I have carried smaller knives in more hidden places, but they wouldn't be nearly as easy to get to quickly. If you've got to reach inside your top, it'll slow you down. I'd keep those as last-ditch options and for the element of surprise - a nobody'd really expect a knife to come out of *there* kind of thing.
The Mini-Grip is waaaay easy to open and can be opened s'durned quickly, too. Eventually I'll be getting another one, I know it.

Just picked up the classic leek with moveable clip. I liked the idea of the frame lock more than the liner. I just hope this one will be easer to give up. I sent a CRKT M-16 over to a lady in Italy and it tore me apart. We only spent a few days together, but I miss that little guy.

Related story, a friend of mine... a young lady who is in ROTC at UCLA, was pulled over, searched, and the officers found a telescoping baton in her purse. California is not exactly weapon friendly, but she managed to get away from any ill-consequences simply by acting naive... I quote now from her letter...

"You would have been so proud, the officer was getting in my face about the baton you gave me and I just batted my eyes and said "My boyfriend was worried about me going away for college so he gave me this, why, I don't even know how to use it..."

The cop let her off, apperantly, he even asked if she would like some self-defense lessons.

Course, she grew up on a farm... last thing anybody needs is for her to be MORE capable of defending herself.

Something to consider at least, a woman has a bit more leeway than a man when carrying a weapon of any kind.
