knife for a lady

the snap lock is indeed a nice knife but i wouldnt edc it cuz its not the simplest / quickest opening mechanism. still carry my m16 with the flipper and a ss cricket on my keys.

Why not sacrifice some of the "prettiness" for some more utility... say, a SAK. Won't get in so much trouble with college authorities if it gets found, and they sell the Pocket Service Tool with one hand opening if you want something that could be used for SD. Hell, they probably sell em' in neon pink at this point.

I don't know alot about knives but I thought I'd just suggest any flick/switch blade. Or perhaps a butterfly knife, I don't know any american laws really seeing as I live in England. So Maybe one of you already suggested that with 'assisted opening' but I don't know what that means lol.

Good luck.

Keep the cricket in the back of your mind. It seems like it might be just right for her needs.

That said, I can also comment on some of the other knives in this thread...

The Kershaw vapor was Danielle's first "real" knife. It's really pretty, and she loves the way it feels in the hand. _But_, she has trouble deploying it due to its pointy thumbstud and stubborn detent (not really an issue of hand strength--Danielle's a massage therapist--more an issue of thumb pain)

The leek has most of the vapor's advantages, plus it opens _much_ easier. And it's really sexy. Unfortunately, I'd be wary of carrying a flipper-fired speedsafe knife in non-traditional ways (in the waistband, for example), and women generally have a greater need for nonstandard carry options than men do. Using the safety would negate that problem, but also kill its fast deployment.

Another option along those lines would be the SS delica (Danielle's current EDC... go figure ;) ). It's a bit more "cute" than "sexy", but it's a great, strong, middlin-sized knife that'll deploy easily and do whatever she asks of it. The only major drawback is its weight, but in a knife this size, it's never seemed to be an issue.

The Dodo's also a great knife, but it's slightly above your price range.

Also, I've only handled one once, but I'll agree that the Kershaw sapphire is _damn_ pretty.

If the young lady can't flick open to a reverse grip, odds are flipping open a butterfly knife in crunch time might be a bit much... not to mention the legal complications of carrying a gravity knife on a college campus. A switch carries the same legal problems, although it does take care of the skill problems.

It occurs to me that getting someone untrained in the use of a knife for self defense purposes may not be the wisest choice... after all, if the person said lady is defending herself from is better than her, she may simply be supplying him with a weapon. I hear good things about the new zappers they are comin' out with...

Couldn't agree more! The SS SE Cricket is The knife. Not to mention it can be carried not only in the bra but attached to the garters ;)

Heh. Danielle actually sometimes garter-carries her cricket on stage when she plays Magenta in the Rocky Horror Picture Show :D

Okay, so maybe a flick or butterfly knife isn't the right decision. But as you said Jgenerica about some good new zappers; a taser might be just the thing. What about a baton? Lol some places allow them I think. I've got a c.k lock knife which opens quite quickly and easily even with one hand while concealed. As for the sexy part I dunno, perhaps you could paint it or something?

I would strongly recommend a decent SAK. Something with at the very least a screwdriver, corkscrew and bottle opener. She'll actually get a lot of use out of it and be quite handy with a pocket knife by the time she ever needs to cut a human with it, if ever. Plus, if she ever gets caught with it, 99% of colleges would overlook a SAK.

I should mention that all the women I know who carry one-handers also carry SAKs.

Y'know, most of the recommendations you've been given so far are well under your $80 maximum. A one-hander-and-SAK package could make the perfect gift for a young woman just going off to college.

Hey all, thanks for all of the suggestions.
As of this point I think I may be leaning towards the black/red Leek. My only thought is how fast this can be deployed in tip-up carry. She handled it briefly in the store and really liked the assist. Still looking at other suggestions also.

Again, with the safety disengaged, the leek deploys very easily. The only problem I've ever had is with the overall thinness of the package. It's sometimes difficult to "orient" the knife properly in a hurry(now, I'm used to handling Spydercos, which're generally flat and broad, so this could be more my problem than the knife's).

And the red/black marbled version sure is pretty :)

My leek came w/ the tip down clip. But it does have the holes to swap that. I like tip up and when it's in my hand, I just use my index finger on the lever and it's open. I love it. I think it'll work for her. I think it'll be a good choice.

My wife doesn't like the Rainbows. But she does love her Pirhana auto w/ purple scales and the highly polished blade. When she's worried about the auto, she takes her old BM liner lock. I don't even know the model, but it's a Mel Pardue something or other. The thumb stud opens it pretty quickly.

Your leek has an option for tip up carry?!?! Pray tell, where did it come from? All of the ones I've seen are tip down with no option to switch. I am, how you say, intrigued...

That's bizzarre. Mine came tip-down from the factory, and has the screw-holes to mount it tip-up.

I'd be wary of carrying a flipper-fired speedsafe like this tip-up.

(Are maybe the marble-anodized models tip-up only?)

Yeah, it came factory w/ the clip mounted tip down. But like Grover said, it's got the holes to mount the clip for tip up carry. Just behind the blade lock. Not that big a deal, I didn't think. Could be the newer models.....

If it's mounted/carried tip up, the flipper won't open the blade as you pull it from your pocket. Don't see any problem.

self-defense? Maybe you should try giving her a can of pepper spray. Most men, not to mention woman who carry a knife would not be able to use it right, or at all if attacked (too scared). Then it would make their attacker angry, that is if a knife was pulled on them. Pepper spray is a wiser choice.

Pepper spray is NOT a substitute for a knife!!!

Pepper spray is for use in low threat situations. Our city police dept. conciders pepper spray to be LESS force than if an officer used EMPTY hands to restrain a person. Its at the lowest end of the force continuium and not for when your life is at risk.

Pepper spray for the guy at the party who keeps putting his hand on her thigh.Knife for the guy with the ski mask trying to drag her into his van.

The new Camillus Heat is slick. The black blade model could even be "sexy." It's slim, light, super fast to open, and has a nice 3.65" AUS-8 blade.

I think she may already carry pepper spray. But she's not one to let a guy off so easilly. Trust me, once a blade is out she can make perfect use of it. That heat does look pretty nice. I think I need to see that in person before deciding (it may be slightly too big.)
