Knife for a non-knife person?

Another Mini Grip vote. Excellent all around small knife.
Good luck!

When i read the title i instantly thought about the rat 2. You could also look at the utilitact 2's. the skyline would also be great. Mini grip although more costly it is a quality blade but may be hard for her to sharpen on her own.

Seemingly infinite suggestions, but out of your original list, I'd go with the Skyline if you think she'd like the flipper. My GF much prefers flippers to the pink Rat II I gave her, and my Buck Vantage Pro was a huge let down.

... The following are my considerations.

- Ontario Rat II
- Spyderco Centofante 3
- Buck Vantage Pro (0347BKS)
- Kershaw Skyline

...

Of those listed, I own all except for the Ontario. I like the Centofante 3 best of all, the Buck Vantage Pro next and the Skyline last. All three are good knives, depending on what you want but I like the Centofante for being thin, narrow and lightweight with great styling and excellent VG-10 steel. I can't really comment on the Rat II since I'm not familiar with it.

Others have been mentioned. Of those:

I agree a Mini Grip is an excellent idea but it's out of the $60 maximum price range.

Knave said he hates the Leek and I agree, for the same reasons.

Dragonfly would be my number one choice of those mentioned but the OP says she wants a 3" blade model.

Funny how this always happens. When someone asks for a recommendation of a good basic, no nonsense knife I pretty much always end up saying, "Get a Delica."

Spydie Delica 4 would be my suggestion. If my wife asked me to get her a budget friendly knife to use, the Delica would be my choice. Of course I could give her mine.

Delica is a great suggestion, but have found that it can be a little off putting to non knife people. The blade shape can be a little aggressive looking.

Skyline is a great suggestion, especially if she likes a flipper. Nice thin no threatening knife.

I would go this the Ontario Rat2 myself. Comes in a variety of colors and is a solid no nonsense knife. And if you are feeling really generous, get her a set of custom scales from one of the craftsmen here on BF. That would really make it a great gift.

How about Karshaw's rainbow Chive? It's small and light, and as someone mentioned earlier there's the whole accessory thing. i have to say, they do the rainbow thing pretty well.
Also USA made and 420HC in a nice frame lock. It's a nice design and fits small hands very nicely.

I will second the Dragonfly. I got one for my wife a couple of years ago and she just loves that darn thing. I have tried to get her to switch to "better" knives and she just sticks with that Spydie.

Kershaw Chive is great, so is the Scallion.

I also love the Leek.... funny how some love it and some hate it, but that's the subjective nature of the knife market.

The Gerber Ultralight LST is a little lockback that weighs half an ounce, with 420HC that's made in the Good ol' USA.

Kershaw Shuffle comes in many colors, and has a bottle opener on the back. Under $20.

At any rate, these are some that I've owned, and was happy with pricewise.

mini-grips should be getting cheaper on the ground now that the new ones are out. cold steels aus-8 blades seem to be going that direction as well. i can't get my scallion back from my wife, she insists that it's hers now. leeks have better steel, imho, than many of the knives mentioned. perhaps an ag russell brand knife? lotta styles in that price range and they also have "seconds".

I bought my wife a small pink Kershaw Shuffle off Massdrop a while back for her to use (instead of my good steak knives) for opening packages and such. She doesn't use it. I'm glad i only spent $12 on it. If she shows more interest one day she can pick out something.

My ex however, she actually permanently borrowed a benchmade mel pardue. Used it for everything. I miss that knife.

I almost every other day carry my wallyworld kershaw orange ken onion blade.... small, sharp, quick to flip open, cheap, resharpens easily to a razor, and you can find it!

Little sucker just keeps showing up in my pocket?! :)
