Hiking the mountains of Afghanistan? Weight will be a critical issue. Especially after the 7 other folks get done passing out the team equipment. As for camping in those mountains? What sort of camping do you suppose they do out on those patrols? Pretty darn "be not seen; leave absolutely no trace." There might be one knife/saw/machete (team equipment) in the group, just like there might be a sleeping bag for every two or three men (again, team equipment). I foresee that nice big bladed knife staying in the footlocker. And the multi-tools--things that are really useful when every ounce counts-- matched to the screws and nuts of the MG's, NVG's, radios, etc.
