Knife for daughter

All,
Daughter in last year of High school. Looking at small folder that is reasonably strong and could be used in a pinch for self defense. This will be after High School and before starting college. Looked on line at CS tuff lite series. Mini or micro. Look like they'd be easy to hold onto not threatening to look at, especially in orange or pink. I've owned many CS folders in past. Not a bad value but locks stiff and hard to open and close.

Does anyone have opinion on these. Anyone know if locks are annoying to open/close? Any other folders I should be looking at?

Thanks-Tim

Depending on the state laws, I'd go with an OTF auto. Something like a microtech utx 70. Autos are Quick and intimidating in a pinch.

You should check with local and state knife laws first. CS american lawman is a pretty solid edc tho. I read in California its illegal to have a knife at any school.

Maybe a waved Spyderco delica. The wave is the fastest deployment method...it's open as soon as it's drawn. Just takes a little practice and it becomes second nature. Delicas are great quality and value as well. Simple, strong lock and not intimidating.

All,

I am very familiar with laws concerning knives. My question about the CS micro/mini lite should give you an idea of type and price range i'm looking for.

Check with local, state, and campus rules where she is likely to attend.

I don't think so... Last time I checked, University of California system has 2.5 inch blade length limit. Other universities may have different restrictions. My understanding (at UC system), is this is not criminal code, but student code of conduct. Violation is grounds for discipline (suspension, expulsion, etc.).

Laws and other restrictions are varied depending on state, city, county, campus, etc... best to do lots of research first, then buy only after you know the rules she will be subject to.

Edit:

Spyderco Dragonfly/Dragonfly 2 would be my recommendation in that range.

i thought it was 2 inch and couldnt lock but slip joint is fine. freaking confusing laws

I'm in college right now in Utah. Here, state law allows knives and handguns (assuming you have a CCP). I carry a knife and my handgun to class all the time. Pennsylvania seems like a pretty free state. I'd check the laws though.

lil matriarch is awesome little blade. And more useful for every day tasks than it looks.

My daughter was wanting a knife some years ago and she picked out a mini-griptilian for herself. More recently I bought her a green Tenacious and she carries it sometime. She took away my Delica and Endura and sometimes carries one or the other. When I saw her Thanksgiving day she was carrying the Delica.

Benchmade Mini Griptilian. They come in pink. Several blade choices.

Spyderco Dragonfly (2.25"), Delica (2.88), Native 5 (2.95").

Lightweight, strong, and come in 'gurly' colors - pink, purple, blue, green, red, yellow. ;)

spyderco native or delica should do just fine. if its more fore self defense, get her a spyderco lil matriarch while you can still find one.

Spyderco native in pink would be a good one too, my daughter carries a benchmade mini presidio or a Zt566 depending on what she wants that day. Both are a nice size for smaller pockets.
