Knife for law enforcement officer

Cold Steel American Lawman. Not for the name but because it is a tough, no nonsense folder that won’t break the bank. Got one for my brother-in-law, a policeman. He loves it.
Many of the police officers in my town carry the EESE 3 fixed blade. EESE will work with POs on discounts as well as branding the knives with the department logo on the blade.

xxGOGOxx is correct. My folder is far more often used for utility, and, while I acknowledge the likelihood of needing it for offhand defense is VERY VERY low, I never like ruling out options that may save my life. That said, it’s why I like drop points like the Presidio I mentioned, and I don’t pick knives with blades that are just “stabby” (for lack of a better term) or very specific to one function or for “fighting.” As mentioned, a good multi tool is EXTREMELY handy on patrol, for lots of reasons.

Another thought, as silly as it is, is uniform limitations. I’ve had many iterations of my agency issued uniforms over 15 years, and some have had pockets that were better (that is, unobstructed by duty belt items or of a particular opening size/pocket depth) than others. The shape and weight of the folded knife may affect how or where it can be carried with confidence. My Paramilitary 2, although a great knife, had to be forced in and out of the “knife pocket” in one particular brand of pants because of the overall height Of the closed knife. But it IS an all-around stellar knife choice.

Many of my coworkers are not knife people, and carry gas station specials or whatever they may have been given as swag at a training seminar. But if you ask this question on a knife forum, you gotta expect a lot of overthinking and minutia lol.

In short, get him any decent folding knife with a stainless blade (he’s gonna get wet at some point, be it rain, snow, sweat, whatever) and good lockup. There’s no need to go into the crazy money range, particularly for something that could be lost or damaged on the job. As your son, he will appreciate it, even if it doesn’t work for him in his work loadout. He’ll figure out what does, and still have a nice gift from his father to carry off duty.

I would say a partially serrated blade and/or a multi-tool in a "Go Bag" with a fully serrated blade (preferably sheepsfoot, like LM Wave).

If you get him a plain edge blade, a multi-tool (i.e. LM Wave, etc.) will have a good serrated blade and is very handy on the road.

Plain edge or partially serrated, here are some random thoughts.
Light weight (Spyderco) may or may not be an issue for him.
Cold Steel makes very rugged knives with something smaller like the American Lawman or the Recon 1 (one of my favorites), Code 4 or the like.
I entirely agree, based upon my background in LE that the uses will be almost entirely utilitarian - though, as mentioned, one never wants to rule anything out but I carried an ankle gun as my back-up; the knife was for cutting food, boxes and occasionally other things that most folks cut in their daily lives.

Back in the day I carried a Benchmade AFCK. Great knife when it was part of their standard line and priced accordingly. I carried in the "Slapper" pocket on my right leg. If I were a LEO today I would carry a RAT II. Great knife for about $30.

In 28 years of LEO service in NM, I never heard of a LEO using a knife defensively. Most common usage was cutting seat belts, which I did several times.

I'm not a PO , but going through my stash I picked a few that I think would be a good.

- SOG Pentagon Elite ( new model is the Spec Arc
- Emerson Mini CQC 8 ( Horseman)
- Cold Steel Counter Point 1
- Cold Steel AD10
- Syderco Manix 2 XL

Value wise, the two Cold Steel knives win, with the Counter Point being the best value.

Lots of great suggestions already listed.

How about a Spyderco Tenacious?
Get two, they’re cheap enough.
A plain edge for off duty and a fully serrated blade for while in uniform.

Dress the tip of the serrated one with a file and you have an instant rescue knife.

Plus a multi-tool for his gear bag and you are good to go at reasonable cost.

First, I would suggest finding out what his department will allow him to carry. This varies widely from place to place. After determining that, a couple of general suggestions would be:
1) Something that works one-handed and is ambidextrous
2) A general purpose blade rather than a dedicated fighter
3) A knife that can easily be either repaired or replaced if need be

And, as others have said... be sure to thank him for all of us for what he does.

I second the find out what fits the department policy.
Lots of officers with inexpensive kershaws and such and but will buy. SOCP dagger or KABAR TDI as their
“OH SHIT !! “ knife.

Since he most likely wears gloves at work I would stick with spyderco design. The hole makes opening one handed with gloves easy and you can feel the knife lock up. Stay away from liner lock knives, nothing like getting gloves caught in the knife. Rubber and leather gloves just catch to often. Since he will most likely use the knife as a pry bar at some point I would go with thick steel. That said I think shaman, pm2 or Manix would be a good fit for a folder.

If it was me looking at what to carry I wouldn’t pass up a fixed blade option. Nice kydex sheath to go along with it. Coated to cut down reflection, stainless and tacky/sticky grips. Spartan Blades comes to mind for some reason.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! You guys are awesome, I knew I could count on this group to provide some knowledge!! I'm going to start shopping.

Paramilitary 2 AND a Kabar TDI. I think he should evaluate his needs and purchase his own multi-tool based on those needs. FWIW, I like the Leatherman Wave series...

I'd look for something ambidextrous that can be easily opened one handed while wearing gloves. I find that opening knives with thumb studs is kind of iffy with my Mechanics Wear gloves on, but Spydie holes work well. A PM2 or Manix would be a good choice. Then there's always the Emersons, like the CQC 7 or Commander.

i would recommend an endura, its a very reliable knife and easy to carry, the black one is pretty cool

Spyderco Military

Big and strong enough to be used in any sort of tactical or defense situation, but also can be used one handed. Then it also has a thin enough blade that can be used for daily tasks.

So far I gathered "folder" & "something tactical"...

What price range? Also, would he be interested in an auto or otf, or a more convential manual style frame, liner, axis style (ambidextrous), or back lock?

If he would prefer an auto or otf over a manual lock, assuming he is one of the many LEO's who are in fact allowed to carry them with immunity or in a state where it is simply legal, he might be? IDK, That would totally change the way to go about this...
Now we could be talking anything from a Kershaw Launch to a Protech or Hogue?

Also what size range would he prefer? Something in the 3.5" or smaller, maybe slimmer, light weight, or easy to pocket?
Or something more in the 3.5"-4" range, or thicker, heavier, and more rugged and robust?

Good value for the money are the Cold Steel American Lawman and the Cold Steel Code 4. Thin and light and strong.
The Spyderco Manix 2 and the PM 2 are well made midsize knives.
And the Benchmade Griptilian is great all around user. Surprised that hasn't t been mentioned before this.

A cold steel recon 1 in any of the blade styles make a good LEO knife. Great steel, lockup, and ergos for a good price.
Agree. The Recon1 is a great knife for any use, if you don t mind carrying a large folder. I carried mine today.
