Knife for law enforcement officer

Hogue a01 mocroswitch (auto) with a wharncliffe blade...

Not super big or heavy as to add on, even as an auto it's not super threatening, but still plenty enough to cut, and easy to deploy, because if/when a cop needs a knife in an emergeny, he is more then likely going to need it to cut something quick... great steel, tough and durable, but not some steel that's impossible for a novice to sharpen.

Doug Ritter RSK mk1 - truly ambidextrous, manual.

Emerson mini CQC-8, if you want something fast deploying but still manual. If you can find one at a good price, or willing to stretch your budget just a bit, another solid "tactical" choice... wave takes a bit of getting used to, but a nice touch when you do.

$150 gift card to a reputable knife dealer with a large selection, to let him pick his own;
*(check the dealer members of this site for a good list to start, bladeHQ or Knifeworks are among 2 of my favorites)...

So, what did you get your son?

Forgot to mention, he is going to be on the range at least 4 times a year to qualify so maybe something like a Leatherman Skeletool would come in handy for unstrapping targets, pulling staples, snapping wire ties on ammo cans etc.

He might use it more on one day at the range than every other day in the field...

I decided on a Benchmade Mini Presidio 2. He wanted about a 3 inch blade and one handed open/close. I kept going back and forth on thumb studs or spydie hole. So I told him today that I have a brand new Spyderco Manix2 I would trade him if he didn't like the Benchmade. I also really like the idea of getting him a new mutitool.

Now your talking!

A knife and a multi-tool are the way to go!

A Firefighter I know carried a MT and a Clip-It Rescue until I talked him out of the Rescue. Now he uses a Griptilian in its place.

The Mini Presidio 2 is a great choice, the option of the Manix if he doesn’t warm up to it is fantastic. I have a Manix 2 XL in my off duty rotation quite frequently, and I love it. I’d carry it on duty without a second thought if my Auto Presidio wasn’t already so engrained in my routine. Good job! Best wishes to him to stay safe out there.

Don't forget to get him a SAK. The tools are ever useful.

I would have gotten him the Manix 2 LW anyway, instead of the Benchmade.

One thing I know about cops, and I've known many, is that knives get scuffed up, get lost, borrowed and never returned, etc. So, getting a less expensive but more capable knife is the way to go as far as I am concerned.

I hope he enjoys the Presidio.

I'm kinda facetious now and then, so when one of these "Which knife for a cop" threads pops up, I get scratching my beard....

Like, which knives are named for cops and such, let me think:

Cold Steel American Lawman,

Spyderco Police

Microtech LEO,

There's a bunch of Smith & Wessons that are named for like S.W.A.T. and Undercover something or other...

Bunch of other ones out there, so help me out folks.... Thread drift be damned!

I know of a LEO that just loves S&W knives. Then again, I remember a Lieutenant that thought S&W knives were the greatest thing in the world. He swore by them.

To me they are pieces of garbage.

Come-on! You know that is all marketing baloney! I have tried and carried many many blades and tools until I decided which one was best for me and my duties...I started with Kershaw, Benchmade etc and autos but ended up with a full serrated Spyderco Salt. I didnt want to worry about auto mechanisms and I can deploy the Salt as fast as an automatic.

The Spydie hole is a little larger than an Endura for when I am wearing gloves and Spyderco customer service has always treated me well and at mpst trade shows you can meet their small staff face-to-face. In my support pocket I carry carbon fiber Skeletool because of the fantastic straight edged blade and compact minimalist low-bulk tool selection...

Update!
I received the Mini Presidio 2 yesterday. It feels great in hand, the action is smooth and the fit and finish is spot on.
It is basically the same size as my PM3.
I think he will like it, but if he doesn't i'll keep it for myself and either buy him something different or work out a trade with him.

My son is a LEO and I would like to get him a daily carry knife for on duty. Does anybody have any suggestions on what to buy for him?
I'd find out what restrictions, if any, his agency has and also what your son may want.

Edited - I see you already made a purchase. Hope it's what he wants/needs.

I really like the Benchmade Loco family. It’s a work horse and has an excellent reverse grip. Good balance between tactical and everyday.

Benchmade Triage would be a good practical choice that could help him out.
Edit: I see you already got him a knife, I think that you picked a good one.

Talk to him and see what he's into. If he's into knives get him something nice from Benchmade, Spyderco, ZT ect but also get him a decent, yet affordable beater (like sub $50)

I carry a Kershaw Knockout while I'm working. I would never use a $200+ dollar knife for some of the things I've put that poor Kershaw through. I'd also push for assisted or auto in a duty knife.

Fwiw I also keep my Benchmade Altitude concealed support side, reverse grip in the event of a gun grab situation. You might ask if his department allows fixed blades or not.

Edit: Ignore me, reading comprehension failure.
