Knife for my dad?

All have noted some good knives. Where are you located in SWVA? I'm originally from Wise Co. but I'm currently stationed in WA. I would suggest taking him to Smokey Mountain Knife Works down near Gatlinburg as a father/son day and see what he like as they have a huge selection good quality knives.

Another option is since you're both firefighters create an account at govx and check out their selection. Great benchmade prices

I'm in Pulaski County .. Fight fire at company 3 in Fairlawn .. And I love smokey mtn knife works . Ain't but about 3hrs from it, always a nice weekend trip down on the bike

My brother and I always try to make a trip down whenever I come home even if it is to just look around lol It's like an adult toys r us

Alright guys... Christmas is coming up and I'm thinkin about getting my dad a new knife. Here is the problem... He is not a "knife guy" yes he uses/carries everyday but ... he can't wrap his head around the thought of paying $100+ for one.

Sounds like he was who Spyderco made their Byrd line for. How about a Meadowlark2 with G-10 handles?

Or, as strategy9 mentioned, most older guys respect the Buck name. How about a Bucklite Max Medium? Made in the USA and very affordable.

I'd like to stay under $150 . We both are fireman so I'd say more tactical then traditional. He isn't big in the fancy bling type knives . That's why I was thinking keep it simple with the mini grip/PM2 . He likes smaller knives so that's what's keeping me from getting the PM2 . I've never held a PM2 but I absolutely love them (if that makes any sense) so I'm not %100 sure on the size . But right now he is carrying a knock off delica so I kinda feel like he would fall in love with the PM2 if he could get used to the larger size
The pm2 is the way to go. It's a medium knife that's compact. Really great knife! Alternative could be a mini grip, Caly 3, cold steel mini lawman in cts. Native. Hard to go wrong with most knives that ppl like on the forum.
Welcome! Not too long a post at all.
I think if you give us a price max, and maybe what style (classic, tactical,) he would like we could point you in the right direction.
Very cool of you to get him a knife, I'm actually making one for my dad this year.

Really appreciate all the responses! I'm goin with the PM2 . Now the only hard part is what color combo haha. (I won't drag y'all into that) thanks a lot guys

Kershawguy has 1st Generation ZT 0550s for $150. Tough, simple reliable frame locks. They're not that big either, as overbuilt ZTs go

What's great about the pm2 is that it's thin enough to edc really easy. The problem with photos and the Internet is that it makes the pm2 look huge next to a delica.

The truth is that the Delica is one of the penultimate in slim, thin and compact Spyderco edc's.

The pm2 in hand is really perfect as a solid compact work knife. Super easy to open and close, I would say with gloves on even easier than an axis lock benchmade. Maybe your dad will catch the knife bug once he manipulates the pm2's lock which is one of its cool features.

I'm sure Dad will love it. Be sure to let us know his reaction. :)

Great choice, and I think he will love it. Second choice would've been mini Grip. My dad was always a hardcore traditional knife guy for a long time, then a couple years back I showed him my new PM2. He loved it and the opening hole and said he'd like one. He liked my BM 940 and 710 but had trouble with the thumbstuds. Got him one that Christmas, and I've yet to see one anywhere that's as hard used or as nasty as his.

knives are like shoes.

I know what kind of shoes I like. I don't buy them as gifts for other people.

My suggestion... match the style of the knife he bought for himself.

That said, don't be surprise if he hates it for the same reason why somebody hate $80,000 pick up trucks. I don't care how much "better" a $150 knife is compared to a $15 knife, but if your dad sees a knife as a tool, he may never ever warm up to $150 knife for the same reason that many people won't warm up to a $80,000 pick up. He'll be too afraid to use it or scratch it.

Giving knives is hard and almost always doesn't work unless your giving an SAK or something like that.

i would've suggested a mini emerson model with partial serrations. they can be found on eki and on the exchange as well as fleabay.

If you think he would prefer a heavy, tank of a knife, I'd say go with the ZT 0350. If you think a lighter knife would be better, go with the pm2. If you don't think he would take to the spydie hole, go with a mini grip

gave my father a PM2 for christmas last year, he was the same person always buying $20 blades. Gave him that one and he loves it, it has never left his pocket and he seems to be really into the quality and build of the nicer knives now. Although he probably still wouldnt buy one for himself still lol

The Spyderco line of rescue knives look nice. I've never owned a Spyderco so can't comment on ease of use but they should do the job..especially while on duty if that's your intention.

I know I am late to the party, but if he likes smaller knives he will like the PM2 but may not carry it. I would look long and hard (since he is a fireman) at the Cold Steel Mini Recon 1. The AUS8 is good and the CTS-XHP better, and it is a lot cheaper and stronger than the knives you have mentioned. My second choice (about the same price as the CTS) would be the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. He can drop either of these in his pocket or clip them, no problem. Plus, they will stand up to serious use (more so the Cold Steel). Here is the spear point (the clip point is the one I chose for myself):
