Knife for the Backcountry Trip

I have been a scout leader for about five years, and I don't issue a blanket ban on any type of knife. If the scout knows how to handle it responsibly, then he can bring it. If I see a scout doing something stupid with a knife, it is my prerogative to remove it from his possession. I am a firm believer in encouraging responsible behavior, and I certainly don't fall for the knee-jerk idea that an inanimate object is the source of trouble.

Too bad I can't convince many of my fellow Kalifornians to think this way.

You are to be commended, sir! Common sense is NOT a common virtue!

My son (11 years old) is in the scouts in the UK. The outdoors work they are doing is marvellous. He has gained a huge amount of self-confidence and this year they included a "bivy-camp" weekend in which they made shelters to sleep under out of tarps, or bashas as we call them here.

They have to pass a "knife badge" before they can carry (or use) a knife at camp.

To go back to the original theme of the thread, I highly recommend a Frosts of Mora Clipper shown here with my handmade (left hip) leather sheath to augment the plastic one it comes with.

The edge is fearsomely sharp out of the box, never seems to mark at all, has a finger guard, is sterilisable (if thats a proper word), great for whittling, cooking, slicing etc, in fact I agree with what everybody else has already written about it. At £10 GBP it a steal really.

This is what my son uses with the scouts.

ya my troops scouts must earn there "totin-chip" as the BSA calls it
i teach a course on safe knife/axe/saw use, care and safety
after i teach them i test them on what they learned and if they know most of it and all the important stuff they get their totin chip cards and are permitted to use personal knives/axes/saws on campouts/meetings
everytime i or any other leader sees them do something stupid with a knife/etc they get one corner cut off their card
once all four corners are cut off, they must retake my course and repass my test before they can handle any knife again

just wondering if any other troops out there have a system similar/ better than that

Why when you ask an opinion on a knife do people automatically recommed others?
I like the look of the Pasayten and if you can afford them I don't think you can go wrong with any from the TOPS range. You do realise however that the blade is very thin(1/8"),for general wilderness stuff I would be tempted to go for a slightly thicker stock,at least 3/16"!
Whatever you get don't lend it out,not everone treats a knife the way you want it treated !!!!

If they let you carry a Spyderco Military then they should let you carry a SOG Field Pup (4" blade). If it turns out to be missing then you wont have a great deal invested. The handle is designed that it wont pull out of your hand when drawing it back. It wont slide up past the guard either and is knurly too. AUS8A is a very good steel too. The design shouldn't scare scardycatpeople either.
