Knife for whittling?

Just found the name for the Buck model 703 that I used to carve the ball in chain. It is named Buck Colt. I believe it is discontinued, but maybe they just don't sell it at Wal Mart anymore. Here is the description of this knife "BUCK COLT (MODEL 703), BIRCHWOOD HANDLES WITH NICKEL SILVER BOLSTERS, HIGH CARBON, HIGH CHROME RUST RESISTANT STEEL, CLIP, SPEY AND SHEEPSFOOT BLADES, 3 ¼" CLOSED."

The Buck Cadet is one of the best slipjoints around for the money, but I like the Middleman better for whittling. The Middleman has that nice oversized sheepsfoot blade.

OK, here is an update. I worked on this on X-mas day and yesterday. I have made a few mistakes, but am still pleased with everything I have learned allong the way. I plan to do 4-5 more ball in cages until I get it perfect before I move on to another project. Below is a pic of what it looks like now. I still have to work on rounding the ball more, then I am going to finish a carving in the bases, sand it, and I am going to use my woodburner to put a some celtic knotwork all over the cage. Thanks for the heads up on what I was missing guys!!:)

Way to go TBG, looks something like the first pic I posted of my latest attempt, and as you can see, with a little sanding, it will look very nice.

Yep. Hoodoo did a great job with that article. I even like his taste in whittling knives. :D

And if you like Hoodoo's ball-in-cages, you should see his carved chickens!!!
Buzz,it didnt even dawn on me that the reason you had seen the article was because of your article on Doris. I just now looked at the authors name while in the reading room this New Year's Eve.You really captured your passion for her.Wonderfully written Buzbait sorry I didnt see it sooner......RB

I'd go with the Middleman as long as you feel comfortable carrying carbon steel on a daily basis. The Middleman is a much better whittling knife, IMHO. The Cadet, if you ask me, is just about the perfect slipjoint for daily use, but isn't so hot for the very specific purpose of whittling. You won't go wrong with either one, but I'd do the Middleman if you want to whittle.

blackeye4you - Yah, that was me shooting off my mouth again. My writing has appeared in the last three issues of KnifeForums - The Magazine. I'll probably keep writing until I can't think of anything else to say.

TheBadGuy - It looks like your whittling skills are coming along well. Just take your time and have fun. The goal is to enjoy the experience, not just the finished product. If you have fun doing it, it's well worth the time and effort.

Is the 4-blade middleman stockman with the wharncliffe blade currently available? I looked on Schrade's web site and it shows only the 3-blade version. Where can I get the 4-blade version?

Aeneas,
Smoky Mountain Knife Works has them in their older printed catalogs, 1-800-251-9306. The SMKW part no. is SC44SM priced at $19.95

I have confirmation e-mail from Schrade that they do have 1095 carbon steel blades. SMKW had them advertized with ss blades in several catalog printings.

I have not seen that Old Timer model listed in any other sources, it may be a special run for SMKW?

Regards,
FK

This is so wierd. I was hust trying to whittle something yesterday with my own old timer..

didn't want a great thread to die :)

Maybe if more people posted their whittlin' crafts, or saw Buzzbait's work, it would inspire others to try it out.

I've been working on a ball in cage following Buzzbait's plan, and will post some pics as soon as its complete.

How's the Cold Steel Stockman as a whittler?
stockmans.gif

Looks like it has a nice sheepsfoot blade on it and I would expect it to be higher quality than a schrade. Anyone use it?

This whittling thread motivated me to buy a new Schrade 340T "middleman". Got a great price on ebay. $10.50, brand new, shipped. I have to say that I have been very disappointed. I think this model is carbon not stainless, and it wasn't very sharp when I received it. I have an old model Sharpmaker which manages to put a razor's edge on everything I own, so far. I have stroked these three blades until I'm blue in the face. Yes, they are probably sharper than the one in the pocket of the average guy walking down the street, but compared to my other knives, they don't make it. Is there anything about the blade bevel, or whatever, that I should be aware of??? Has anyone else had this problem with the Old Timers? Right now, I'm going to stick to my trusty Vitorinox.

I have a few Cold Steel knives and for one order at Special Projects.com I was given a CS sak style knife and was bummed when I got it. It was made in china and was cheap and cheesy.I could be wrong about the other pocket knives but would find someone that had one first.
