Hey folks...looking for some good, sage advice here...I currently have a BM Grippy 551S that I carry while hiking/backpacking, but I need to get something for my wife, in the case that she has to use a knife, and I'm unavailable for some reason (lost, pooping, eaten by bear, etc.)...I'd like to stay under $50, have a blade no less than 3", and have it be moderately reliable and sturdy...thanks!

For hiking I would really recommend something along the lines of a Mora. Doesn't have to be opened, is always ready, takes a very sharp edge, suitable for all camp chores. Nice thing is she has probably been using knives like this in the kitchen for years and is already use to them.

I always take my Fällkniven F1 with me during my hiking/survival trips. I can't think how a knife could be made better than this one. Even with Busses, Fehrmans and ER's in my inventory, F1 stays to be my favourite.

Another vote for the mora (paired with your pick of woods geared SAK).

Edited to add: You can get a Mora 510 or clipper and Vic. Farmer for $30 plus shipping, definitely falling under $50

RAT Cutlery Izula. You can get them for around 50, their quality is awesome and their warranty is unbeatable. She will love it.

I would go with a laminated mora or if your willing to spend just a little more get a spyderco mule S90V while you can.

Izula for a fixed, but it is less then 3". Personally I'd pick up a Endura or Tenacious for that price range. If you don't mind stepping into the $100-$120 range (knife + scales), you can't do much better then a S90V Mule. :)

I've got that one on my hip right now. Great knife. :D

If you were looking for a folder, might I recommend a Spyderco Tenacious? It seems to fit your needs.

Tenacious of a Delica for a folder. Even a Salt 1 or Pacific Salt would work as well, rust free H1. :)

Byrd Cara Cara or Kabar Large Dozier are great bargains ($25ish). Use the extra $ for a good whistle, compass, etc.

Others:
Kabar Mule
Kershaw JYD/JYD 2
Spyderco Tenacious

The large Kershaw Storm 1475 is under 40 dollars, a frame lock, thin and very tough, easy to sharpen, has a nice shaped handle with traction inserts on the non-clip side. (nice bonus made in USA)
Can't beat it for the money! I've carried this one and used it to hack brush away from hiking trails and it's held up very well. The blade is still dead tight, lock-up same as new.
With it's 3 and 3/4" blade it's big enough to defend one's person with should the need arise. I highly recommend it for a under 40 dollar folder.

My wife just saw the picture of the Izula above, and said" Oooh, is that pink!". :)
$81 is a bit pricey for that little thing though, relatively speaking.

Various knife retailers, such as KnivesShipFree and JSBurlysFlashlights (I think both have these in stock right now) as well as the usual ones sell the Izula for ~$50ish. I am not certain that the pink one is out yet?
