Mora Clipper 860 (SS) or 840 (carbon steel) - $13 each at various places on the net... The knives in the photos are 860s :D

I say just get them some safety cutters and be done with it.

CRKT Drifter framelock in SS. Framelock so will take abuse. 8CR13MOV is pretty tough for a stainless, it's 17 bucks, and relatively thick to take some prying abuse.

Oh also CRKT Lake if you think they are really stupid and need a secondary locking system on a lockback. Also about 17 bucks new.

My first thought was Opinel - I did a quick count and I think the Opinel wins on the number of recommendations - guess that's telling you something

My son tells me that Jed Clampett uses an Opinel for whittling in the BHB series

Smith & Wesson cuttin' horse knives...many blade and handle designs under that model name, but still good knives, and can be had for $5 to $10 each...

I would not be handing out good knives to deadbeats. The China Rite sodbuster is good enough for them at about $5, and the Rough Rider Sodbusters are better than they deserve at under $10.

I'd go with a Case Sodbuster Jr also. I picked one up for $17 at Lowe's and it is a great inexpensive office EDC.

I'm tired of having to come to the rescue every time someone needs something cut at work. So I need to find a knife to hand out. They should have these things.

1. Non-threatening look (No Tanto)
2. Sturdy, able to take the relatively stupids task they will try to use it for, these are not knife people
3. Easy to sharpen (although, I'll probably be doing all of that)
4. Inexpensive (under $25, preferably closer to $10)
5. Something that won't break under normal use (I don't want to kill them, with the exception of one guy, but he won't be getting one anyway)
6. 2"-3.5" I don't want a tactical ninja knife.
7. Straight edge, I hate combo, and they'll just hurt themselves on the serrations.

I was thinking Vic Cadet but I could only find pink ones last time I went where I've been finding them, I think it'd be funny to hand them out but I actually want them to use it. I also thought about those disposable blade utility knives, but was suprised to find that they run in the $5-$15 range .

...a lesson I picked up in LE....if you're going to be lending things out, always buy really odd colors...pink, fluorescent green....they are FAR less likely to walk away that way..

Personally if someone handed me a opinel and I did not have prior knowledge of such blade my first thought would be.... ugly, junk, wood handle hillbilly knife. Though its not, the whole point is for them to carry it so they don't need your knife right?

SAK, byrd line, sodbuster, kershaw half ton, would be the ones I'd look at.
