Knife for working out

I wasn't talking so much about the weight room, but i am getting ready for air assault school and am starting to do crossfit outdoors and get ready for a 10 mile ruck march

I dont bother in the weight room. Thats a little over the top to me. On runs I sometims take my 710 but usually I go knifeless:)

I would think that a very heavy knife would be good for working out with. Say 20 pounds or so.

I do a lot of jogging on trails where there are very few people around. I have always carried a knife and have gotten ticked because of the amount of sweat I produce and the rust it eventually produces on the knife. I got a Salt 1 about 2 months ago and have loved it. I have not washed it off once and it still does not have a spec of rust. Needless to say a Spyderco Salt would be my suggestion.

Whitty

I always carry either a Mini Griptilian or Delica IWB while working out.

Trail running, trail riding, city running, and I've never had either open or even move much, either in Basketball type shorts with the elastic waist band, or drawstring shorts.

I pretty much have a knife on me all of the time, except when working out (gym, track and/or field), bathing and sleeping. Haven't ever had a need for one while working out. But if you really want one, I'd go with a White Spyderco Dragonfly or perhaps a Salt.

I'd carry a Kershaw Leek/Zing. When I played basketball 3 + times per week last summer at 24 hour fitness, the leek was always on me. Thin, small, and not a spec of rust.

Spyderco Tasman Salt for me. Super light weight, fairly small and rust proof. Winning combination for anyone who's frequently active.

Take a look at the Benchmade 530. 3.25 inch spearpoint blade with 154CM, axis lock for ease in deployment, and less than .75 inches thick. Plus it weighs less than 2 oz, and is nice and tough.

How about a Boker Subcom. It's pretty thin, and not terribly long. Probably would be among the most comfortable knives I can think of to have clipped in the waist of gym shorts.

This.
I wear it to the gym, jogging, and anywhere I have to wear stretchy wasteband pants. It's perfect for it.

Plus, they have a wharncliffe version and a hawksbill version as well.

I use my calypso jr or Delica for this kind of carry but would prefer a dragonfly for this specific use.

fourteen replies and no one has suggested leaving the knife in the locker where it belongs...

Attitude like this is not helpful. The original poster asked specifically about a knife he could carry with him during his workout. That just might be why nobody yet suggested doing just the opposite.

20 pounds for a guy that's working out is akin to lifting a feather.

Depends on how many reps you're doing, and on what machine! :D

And Phil is absolutely right. Even if you ARE working out in a gym, some of us like to keep our valuables on us instead of in the locker. There's no way I'm leaving valuables--my wallet and car key, for instance--in a locker, just because I'm so absent minded that I'd probably shove the lock in my pocket and head off whistling toward the gym.

As someone who works with tools: when exercising outdoors, there's something comforting to have one of the the simplest, most efficient tools I own with me when I'm at my weakest.

I don't have any specific delusions about fending off a mountain lion or whatever, but it's nice to know it's there.

thanks a lot for the suggestions guys, a few knives were mentioned that are already on my short-list and will probly end up getting one of those

I was thinking of starting the same type of thread.
The salt series makes sense because it wont rust, but I have an all serated in the delica size but i wouldnt want serrated for an edc like that. I bought that one for kyaking, works great, i jsut leave it in my board shorts, dont even rinse it off.
Only problem is that im not crazy about the looks of any of the salt series.

One thing i havet seen anyone add is that maybe you wouldnt want to carry a folder with a sharp tip, that way if it happened to inadvertantly open you would not get cut as badly.
I never really though about just cliping something to the wasteband until it was mentioned here.
Maybe this is an excue for a new knife.

I guess the hide away knife would also work good on the shoe, or inside it.
