Knife for working out

Don't be afraid to go the neck knife route, either. At worst, you might run the risk of snapping the cord or chain -- because if you're wearing a neck knife at all, you'll be smart enough to wear one that won't choke you to death should it get caught on something.

I have a couple of older Meyerco neck knives with plastic sheaths that are perfect for this type of duty -- they're the forerunnres to the Neck Lance.

Al Mar Falcon 1.3 onces with a full 3 1/4" blade, and well heat treat 8A steel.

I leave mine in the locker at the gym(weights make great clubs:)), but for running outside, a Spyderco Native should have enough blade, with little weight, and a secure enough clip for IWB with shorts.

The Spyderco Salt series would be an excellent idea---all of them are slim, lightweight, and are completely rustproof when the salt of your sweat comes into contact with the knife.

I also carry a Boker Subcom or Subclaw when working out---compact, with big cutting power and the solidity of a frame lock. There are many options, good luck finding one that suits you!

Spyderco Calypso Jr. lightweight.
I think of mine as my "sports" knife. Running, walking, swimming, cutting grass, working out. It's old and beat up, so I won't die if I lose it. It's flat and light, and the lockback design ensures the blade isn't coming open accidentally. The VG-10 has held up well. It's been in a lake, a couple of rivers, swimming pools, the ocean, and sweat all over hundreds of times without rusting.

+1 on the Caly Jr. I take mine walking around the neighborhood all the time.

However, I'm leaving any knife I take in the gym still clipped to my pants pocket, which are neatly folded in my locker.

I see no real use for a knife in a weight room. I think it would interfere with your squats and most other major exercises.

I carry a Camillus Heat in my waistband when running . It is comfortable and has not rusted at all in the 2 years I have had it . also I agree with those who suggested the Spyderco Native , I also carry that sometimes ,I often forget I even have it on me , since it is so light and comfortable.

I carry a delica in the gym with a photon light attached. Comes in handy in power outages. My delica is clipped to my shorts pocket, may come in handy if I have to cut my way out of the back press machine. A Neck knife is a pain in the neck on the bench press cause it tends to wander. Also the gym I go to is public city run gym and kids from the hood just wander through looking for opportunities. one of the regulars had his car stolen, kid told the manager he forgot his combination so they cut the lock off for him.

+1 for the subcom. I picked one up a few months ago to use as a money clip and have been carrying it ever since for PT. Its low profile make it perfect for rolling around in the dirt. I have also carried my delica and paramilitary but the para rides to high in my shorts for anything but running. For people that don't think you need a knife when you are working out, I used mine about a week ago to cut my buddies sweatpants when he twisted his knee on the run and the corpsman needed a better look. I have also used my knives while trail running to cut vines and other items that have overgrown the path. I keep a multitool in my toolkit on my mountain bike to make make emergency repairs. My para mili is always with me on my early morning jogs through my neighborhood. If some people think knives are crazy, when I was in Kuwait I used to carry my pistol IWB when I went on my morning runs...but then again so did everyone else.

I keep my knives in my bag, I only carry a Vic Cadet to the gym though(no pocket clip), I sometimes have to put my mp3 player into my waist band because when I power clean, the bar would smash the whole mp3 player lol, so there's no room for 2 things on my waist band(if the knife is in the sweet spot, the mp3 player would fall down my pants, if the mp3 player is in the sweet spot, the knife would dig into my waist).

I would go for spyderco's H1 steel knives as many have suggested, sweat will give your knives some surface rust.

A very old Spyderco Delica--plastic clip--one that was worn in a sock for 15 years.

if you really need a knife while working out, how about a Kershaw... all the ken onions are thin and have a nice lock so you dont cut yourself. the size is up to you.
