Knife from Walmart

Welcome to BF sir! Like you I darted my knife hobby buying "junk"...Hell, I still do! Nothing wrong with buying a cool looking knife made from crappy materials for decoration if it has a good price. I have half-a-dozen M-Techs, Milspecs and other junk folders with crappy blades and weak locks because:
1) They have cool looking designs and
2) They cost like, $5.
Now as for good knives for cheap? The possibilities are ENDLESS. I know all the expensive knives on this forum can be daunting (I can't afford a Benchmade, let alone a custom Hinder job!) but you'll see many glowing reviews for knives under a hundred, fifty, even twenty-five dollars. The Ontario Rat 1 & 2, Chinese Spyderco/Byrd (like that Ambitious you ordered), SAKs..the list goes on!
And as for the Leek...I suggest saving another paycheck and getting this one:

Better (IMHO) blade. Just use colored grip tape to add flair and grip.

Yea, I really want some knives from M-tech just for the design :D

The design on that blade for the leek looks really cool. Even if it is around 9 dollars more than $50, I think I'd like that better than the normal looking Leeks

It's a cheap piece of junk made by people who are treated like animals, from the cheapest metals available. For the money you spent on it, you could've gotten a Buck brand knife from the same store, or even a Victorinox SAK.

Being an engineer and having travelled 4-5x a year to china for the last 12 years I can tell you they are not treated like animals. They went from $1 a day to $300 a month, that's a big step. They also have a middle class and a lot of millionaires second only to US.

I have some of these junk walmart knives as well. I'm new to knives and startling small. You just don't jump in and buy a rj Martin q36, it takes time to learn. Reflecting on my main hobby guns, my friends still wonder why I buy every new glock when I have 3 ed browns, 2 nighthawks and 2 wilson combats (1 on order). The answer is simple, because I like them. I actually carry that Winchester all the time, if I damage it I don't care. Same for my Glocks.

Unfortunately, I don't have a kmart anywhere near me :( After what you said you bought, I really wish I did though.

Here's a idea...you can shoplift one from Walmart and if they try to stop you, you can pull out your "SD knife" and then only face juvenile charges!

I find it to be amusing (ironic, even) that you are bad mouthing a new member using a knife for self defense when you started a thread about a Spyderco Matriarch.

Anyways. Freshfish, stick around. There's lots to learn here. Any knife is better than no knife. I still have some of my first knives floating around here somewhere.

I did start a thread about the Matriarch, and I do carry it as a back up self defense tool, which is basically it's only purpose. I'm also an adult in my 30s, carry (legally) a handgun and have zero desire to use anything for self defense ever. I badmouth someone who is a kid and carrying a knife as a weapon, especially some ChiCom garbage that's probably more likely to break on you than not.

Lets get back to talking about the knives and not each other.

General Knife Discussion isn't a good place for ignorant comments about China, either.

I have been using knives of various descriptions and pricepoints for over half a century. And I still like to pick up an odd barlow or a boy's knife that sold for a dime in 1911.

They were low pricepoint knives that were usable then, and fit the price a youngster could afford, and are still usable now over 100 years later.

Of course I like nicer knives too at higher pricepoints, with higher grade steel and other components.

But my every day carry knife is a mid to low priced discontinued production knife.

There are quite a few well made, high value knives made in China, namely Spyderco and Kershaw. Most use 8cr13MoV steel, which is a good budget steel when manufactured properly. These knives can often be had for actually less money than many famous name brand (S&W etc) knives that are licensed out and often lacking in quality.

How much did the Buck 110 cost you?

In 1976 I think it was around $20-25.00? Times have changed. They retail for around $89.00 or a little less now? I always have one or two at the shop for customers. i am at home this evening. I am sure that the wall will have a very good price on one.

If you don't lose it and it doesn't get stolen you will still have a great knife to give to one of your own kids.

I buy pretty much all my knives from dealers, and with the right dealer, you can pick up a 110 for not more than $27 these days, new in box.

You carry the Matriarch and a handgun for self-defense, but have zero desire to use anything for self defense ever?
I know I'm younger than you buy ten years (woah, big gap huh?), but there's nothing wrong with carrying a knife for self-defense if needed to. I like how you don't even know which knife I carry for my self defense and still call it garbage :D

Since you put it that way, it would be pretty cool to have a knife that I can give to one of my kids and in turn, give it to one of theirs..a knife that's been handed down generation after generation :)

I'm thinking of looking into Wal Mart to see if they have one for a good price!

I haven't looked at my local lately, but when I did they had them for around this price. They're good knives, and each year the markings change. I only have 3 but I think every so often I'll add another. They're a great knife to own.

Yes, I do; I have no desire to harm anyone but would not hesitate to do so if they tried to harm me or my family. And yes, there is a huge gap, it is not a secret that males between 16 and their late 20s commit by far the most violent crimes, it mainly is a result of immaturity and impulsiveness leading to aggression. Add weapons to that mix and the result is often ugly.

Finally, ah I can just assume.

I'll get one as soon as I can before it gets more expensive! :D

You have a family? How sweet. It would be pretty horrible if something bad were to happen to them :(
And are you sure that guys between ages 16 to late 20's commit the most violent crimes? You're not just saying that without any resources to back you up? If you do have resources, then every guy between those ages shouldn't be allowed to carry any kind of weapons, huh? No knives, no guns, no blow darts, no scissors, no multitools, heck, their fists can even be a horrible weapon! That would suck, imagine walking around with no arms. Yikes...

You know what's better than assuming and looking ignorant? Asking. And let me tell you, it's ok to ask things, don't let your pride and ego get in the way.

I kow you didn't mean it this way but your family remark sounds vaguely threatening. :P The sad face does help though.

I am hoping the 110 is one of those knives that will never get too expensive.

What knife DO you like to carry for SD?

One of the first knives I ever owned was an M-Tech, and I do not recommend them.

If I were you I'd grab an Ontario Rat Model 2, Kershaw Cryo, Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 or ESEE Zancudo.
