Knife from Walmart

Wal-Mart sells a bunch of these little knives. The company probably likes the product because they are very inexpensive to import while providing a basic knife that gives average performance for most people. If you knew the unit cost you would be enlightened even more.

Also, as has been pointed out here before, made in China and made in Taiwan are different things. My Browning comp. cutter offers truly sterling performance at a reasonable price point. I was shocked at how well the knife performed. Then my trusty GB folder in M4 by Spyderco: just a miracle knife in every way! Both of these cutlery pieces were crafted in Taiwan.

I also agree that it is good to have a few beater folders around. If you break one, you have not lost much. Wal-Mart would probably replace an inexpensive folder if you trashed it but then again you might have to show your receipt!

I have enough beater folders around ;)

Doesn't Spyderco also have knives made in China as well?

They didn't have the kind of hand I liked though...maybe I could go back to Wal Mart and see if they have anything new.

Have you tried ordering online? The selection is obviously way better and the prices are almost always better too.

Freshfish,
Just keep looking & learning about knives and if you do want to upgrade to a solid strong folder that Buck 110 served me well for camping, hiking etc when i was about your age. It ended up going home in a Police man's pocket one evening. i went home that night instead of to jail so I didn't raise a fuss about it. lol The knife had nothing to do with the trouble I got myself in, Beer and pot had more to do with it.

I'm looking at the Kershaw Leeks...would you recommend those? I don't want the skyline just because so many people have those..

How much did the Buck 110 cost you?

People have just as many Leeks as they do Skylines. There must be a reason for so many people owning them, probably because it's a good knife, USA made, and works really well for cutting. You want really unique, go custom 1 of a kind/1 offs.

Maybe when I have enough money to buy a custom made one haha

I'll stick to the Kershaw Leek for this one, I like how the blade looks :)

Seconded. Honestly, try any Kershaw. Very unlikely you'll regret it. If you're skeptical keep it at around $40 or so. I understand knives on a budget. Kershaw definitely does too.

I still own several Leeks and have used them often. They are really nicely made and get the job done discreetly.

If you have a kmart still around, go check them out. Mine had some SAKs for dirt cheap. I bought 2 and paid $17. One was an esquire, the other was an evo grip

Unfortunately, I don't have a kmart anywhere near me :( After what you said you bought, I really wish I did though.

Cheap and inexpensive are not the same thing. Winchester branded stuff is cheap junk. For a similar price range you can get China Made Kershaws that are inexpensive yet high quality, and for a little more, USA made Kershaws.

Winchester($9.99) vs Kershaw($42.99) scenario, using cheaper knives to cut plastic off of stainless material all day at work, got some for the guys to use, the Winchesters rolled edges and had to be resharpened every day, tried the Kershaw, same environment, same work duty, Kershaw tip broke, so sometimes the cheap stuff is worth more depending on the jobs at hand, to carry around I probably would never have a Winny on me, but for jobs that require constant abuse to a edge, and it don't bother ya one bit to beat it up, cant think of none better.

Learning to sharpen a knife is best done on a cheap knife. All knives eventually get dull, regardless of price or origin.
