Knife getting dull from sitting in pocket?

mastiff & knifenut bring up some interesting vectors. even after going to 6000 on the edge pro i sometimes still strop on diamond paste leather or plain leather strop. i'm not sure that manual sharpening by some of the masters i've seen on the forum can be surpassed by the edge pro. many of us are'nt nimble enough & have the eyes to out perform sharpening aids. i know that i benefit from the edge pros & early belt driven lo- rays. atmopheric gases not visable to the naked eye can contributate to oyyidation of even certain stainless alloys. chlorine eventually will defeat even 440c.--dennis

The answer is so simple, and yet no one has figured it out.
When your not paying attention, your wife is taking your knife to shave her legs then putting it back.

I've never had it happen with low alloy stainless either but S30V S90V elmax and others that (correct me if I'm wrong) have a high percentage of carbon are the blades it seems to happen most with. Try re-touching on the EF stone with almost no pressure the next day then strop, it should help.

When it gets down below the 1200 grit I think the variables from the larger "teeth" play a larger role. Haven't tested that yet though so its nothing more than a educated guess

Some of these class steels have higher carbon than the white and blue HC steels ( and in the case of super blue "HC alloys". White steel is about as high carbon, pure, clean steel as there is made anywhere. It's amazing stuff, but no question a niche product. It does the "dark sider" thing as well or better than anything else and is the steel used to separate layers of flesh in sushi without damaging or bruising adjacent layers. It's, in it's pure form not really a beginners steel.

Super blue has a tiny bit better corrosion resistance and better wear resistance due to the addition of smal amounts of Moly, Vanadium, and a healthy dose of tungsten ( 2.5% ).

I agree that at a point ( below 1200 grit we'll say for lack of test data) the larger teeth and ragged edges ( in comparison :) ) are probably the reason a mirrored knife such as yours, or Jim Ankerson's don't show the same traits, at least not nearly as quickly.

I do typically just "freshen " up the edge when this happens, not completely resharpen it.

I agree Dennis. I've been carrying, maintaining and sharpening by hand for around 40 years now having grown up on a family farm and having real jobs starting at 13. I can make the type of edge that I want depending on the steel type, hardness and jobs expected to be performed. Despite this my edges sure don't look as good as Jim's, or Knifenut1013. As long as it gets the job done I'm happy. :)

Thank you Dennis and Knifenut 1013. Joe/raleigh

Nope. No wife here. :) Just a very large dog and he's not big on shaving. ;)

Necro thread.

It from 2011.

You are quite welcome to start a new thread on the subject, you know.

I was just poking around the forms and saw this, figured if someone comes across it might help. What he’s feeling as sharp is the burr. But if it’s not taken off it’ll fold over and make you’re knife dull in a hr or couple days, just by sitting.

Thats not the point.

You are necro'ing a thread from 2011 - read the rules.

By all means, reference this thread in your new thread.

Lot of water under the bridge since 2011.

I don't carry anything else in a pocket I have a knife in,except maybe chapstick.I can't believe that it has'nt been mentioned yet,but it could be a wire edge.;)

It was mentioned. I agree too it likely was a wire edge which seems very sharp at first but breaks off easily from things as light as paper cutting.

Make sure to do a few very light strokes at a higher angle than you were sharpening at in order to break the wire edge off.

As to edge oxidization I am not sure what the verdict is on that. There are times where I leave my knife in storage for a while and the edge seems to be duller when I pull it out.

Edit: wow necro.

And this is why there is a necro rule. Unsuspecting people start responding to folks who haven't logged on in 4 years.

Really don’t understand. If you start a new thread wouldn’t it not have as much info as an old one would have? And the ppl that asked the question that never got an answer would now know.

Whats not to understand - its in the rules.

Further more, some old threads
can contain antiquated posts, as new knowledge have been gained.

I was asking why. Forget about it, Have a nice day.
No you didn't. You said you didn't understand. That is different than why.

Plus, you don't really need to understand why a rule exists, just know that it does and follow it.

If you do need clarification on why a rule exists you can start a thread in tech support and get an answer there.

And the reasons why have now been posted here several times.

They should make a rule about being respectful.

Spoken I'm sure with respect.

Rules here are here for a reason, and not to be argued about in a thread (necro as it is) about knife blade edge holding variables

How old thread should be to be considered necro ?
