Hello all!
I would like to start off by stating that I am completely uneducated when it comes to anything to do with knives. So please go easy on me if I say/ask anything extremely stupid.
The reason I am here is that I want to buy a knife for my husband for Christmas. I am looking for suggestions for a good knife.
I would like something good quality, that also looks good, and is reasonably priced around $100.
I have been looking at everyday folding knives. The brands I've looked into so far include Spyderco, Kershaw, Gerber, Buck, among others. They all seem good, but again I am pretty much lost because I don't really know exactly what would be good for him. He enjoys hunting and camping and being outside, so I'd like to get him something useful that will last, that can replace his broken down cheapie one. I know it would be ideal to allow him to pick his own, but I know he'll just pick the most cost effective option because he's frugal. I'd like to spoil him a bit and surprise him with something nice that he wouldn't choose for himself.
I also live in Canada, so it needs to be able to be shipped here!
Again please keep in mind that I personally don't know much about knives, so please be forgiving if I've said anything overly ignorant.
Any advice you can offer is very much appreciated by myself and my husband!
Thank you folks!

Welcome to Bladeforums J.
Does he has a specific style of knife that he really likes? For example, does he like the traditional pocket knives like Case, Queen, or Shrade? Is he more into the modern style folders with specific blade shapes?

Everyone in this forum will be immediately a little jealous of your husband upon reading this post. It's not very common that someone who isn't into knives will go to a place like this for advice to buy a gift for someone else.

Hi thanks for the reply!
As far as I know, he has a few knives up at the cabin which are big hunting knives, and some machetes and things like that. He also keeps a larger fixed blade knife in the car (Which I believe is one of the Bear Grylls line), and then he has a cheapo folding knife that he carries with him which he picked up at the sporting goods store for like $15. This is the one I'd like to replace for him. He uses this knife for all sorts of applications, everything from opening boxes, cutting trees, and other knifely activities haha
I don't think he's very picky about blade style or shapes or anything like that. I know his has a serrated area on the blade.
Sorry for being so vague, I don't want to ask him any of these questions, or else he'll get suspicious! :P

Piggy-backing RevDevil's line of thought, what kind of knife does he use now. Do you have a picture of it or can you describe it?

Right now his is a cheap one he picked up at the sporting goods store. He's had it for a while (years? months? I really couldn't say)
It has a black textured handle (which I think he prefers over a metal handle because it won't slip)
It is maybe about 7" when opened up. The part of the blade closest to the handle is serrated and then the end bit is not.
Thanks!

Oh ok, so you're looking for a replacement pocket knife. Check out most of Kershaw's offerings. They're pretty inexpensive, yet offer high quality and bang for your buck. Look at things like the Skyline, Blur, the CQC series, or a Thermite. There's plenty more to choose from as well.

Also, visit kershawguy.com, there might be a few ZT blems for sale for around your budget. (ZT is Kershaw's higher end brand, and blems mean they left the factory with some kind of blemish, usually not noticeable, and are marked at a discount for that reason.)

Hope this helps. :)

In the $100 and under range, there is going to be a crazy amount of options. Speaking of the cost, would you prefer to just get him one knife that would take up the whole budget? Would you rather spend a bit less and possibly get him say......2 knives that would add up to around $100? That would give him some options if he wanted to switch out which knife he carries from time to time. I know some people aren't big on that and I can understand that. I will say that all of my folding knives thus far are on the cheaper side(under $50). You can find some great values in the Spyderco line (Tenacious, Ambitious, Persistence, Resilience), Kershaw makes some nice knives that are relatively inexpensive (Cryo, Cryo 2, and skyline are just a few few of the options that they have). The one thing with Kershaw......most of their knives tend to be assisted opening so you would need to make sure that's legal where you are. The Ontario Rat-1 or Rat-2 would be some other good options. Another question.....is your husband left-handed or right-handed? That can play a role with some knives as some can be a bit more awkward for lefties. Also, you need to consider the length of the blade. You have all kinds of options on those and some people like larger blades while others prefer smaller. I apologize if I'm asking too many questions and making this confusing, as this isn't my intent at all. Others will undoubtedly chime in with more (and possibly better) suggestions. Keep us updated on what you decide, if you will. Good luck with your search and I hope he enjoys whichever knife or knives that you get for him. :)

My personal favorites are the Benchmade Griptilian and Spyderco Delica or Endura.

Those are in the price range and very versatile knives that would be suited to a wide number of tasks.

I put a Morakniv, Opinel, and Spyderco on my Amazon wish list and guess what... My wife ordered them for me for our anniversary. I was very happy. At your price range you could pick up three and meet your price range.

The range of knives you can get can be a bit overwhelming. Here are some of the top choices for me in that price range off the top of my head:

Spyderco:
Paramilitary2 $110-$130 USD
Military $120-$140
Manix2 $85-$110

Kershaw:
Piston $65-$80 (assisted opening)

Benchmade:
Griptilian (551 or 550 are bigger versions, 555/556 smaller) ~$60-65 on forums, ~$85-$95 at stores.
530 $70-$95

I believe all of these knives except maybe the Kershaw Piston come with a combo-edge option. A combo-edge is when the edge of a knife is partially serrated, like how you've described your husband's knife. Spydercos also come with a fully serrated option (or just plain edge). The general view of combo edges on forums is that they aren't preferred. I think combo edges tend to be marketed to people who don't care too much about the knife they're using, which is why they are often found on super cheap knives. Fully plain-edge knives are vastly more popular from what I've seen on the forums.

Personally, I'd take a look at the list of knives, see which ones appeal to you and maybe check out a couple of YouTube or forum reviews on it. Just serch the brand, model and 'review' and you should get quite a bit of options to look at.

Delica or zt 0350 would be my vote ( this is an assisted opening meaning it basicilly has a spring to make the blade fly open). Or if you want something really light the manix 2 lightweight would be my vote. Your husband is a lucky man

That's a good idea, getting two knives instead of one. I think I'd prefer to get one $50-$100 knife because I think that will really knock his socks off more than two less expensive ones. I want it to really feel like a treat rather than just more of what he already has.
My husband is right handed, so no need to worry about that!
Thank you for your reply!

Every man should have a Spyderco Military :)
I'd say to go with that.

Edited to add: if he likes multitools, the Victorinox Swisstool is tops, in my opinion. It may be more useful to him.

Spyderco Delica is a great knife, textured grip, available in many colors, can get it with a combo edge (which is the type he has now) and if ordered from some sites like Knifeworks, you can have his name laser etched on the blade. Very nice of you to do this for him, he's a lucky man...

Dang Sullivan, you got my hopes up a little...another Canadian Sullivan here and at first I thought you might be my wife fishing for ideas...but alas you're not.

A lot of good suggestions here already. Since you seem open to any ideas have you checked out any Victorinox Alox swiss army knives? You can get an arrangement of tools that would come in handy and you can get the handle engraved. They are great!
If you think he might like a multi tool check out Leatherman multi tools, you can get a variety of options and prices.
Good luck finding the perfect knife for your husband, I'm sure he will love it! You might even know more about knives than he does by the end of this!

How do we all feel about "Spyderco Endura Flat Ground, VG10 Satin Plain Blade, Black FRN Handle".
It is $115 on sale for $65.
Also I am interested in the Kershaw ones, but I don't think I like the assisted opening ones, can anyone suggest one that's just normal opening? Or do they not offer that?

hahaha that's so funny! Sorry Sullivan! Hopefully your wife is a smart lady and gets you what you want! She must have been pretty smart to marry a Sullivan in the first place!
Thanks for the suggestions and the laugh!
