Knife Gift for Husband

How do we all feel about "Spyderco Endura Flat Ground, VG10 Satin Plain Blade, Black FRN Handle".
It is $115 on sale for $65.
Also I am interested in the Kershaw ones, but I don't think I like the assisted opening ones, can anyone suggest one that's just normal opening? Or do they not offer that?

That would be a great choice.

Spyderco knives have a rabid following.

They have excellent quality control. The blade will also be designed to do the one thing knives are supposed to do. It will cut very well!

Thank you everyone so much for your suggestions! This has really been such a big help. I don't know what I was expecting when posting this, but I was actually quite nervous that I'd get torn apart for not knowing anything!
Now I feel like I know a lot and you've all been so pleasant!
I'm going to continue looking on the Internet, and I'm also going to a sporting goods store next week, because they stock spyderco.
I will update everyone on which one I pick, and now I won't hesitate if I have more questions!
Thanks so much everyone, I'm sure my husband will have a very good Christmas :)
Who knows, I might even pick up a knife for myself!

I just acquired a ZT 0566, and really like it. These are a really good value for what you get. The assisted opening function can easily be removed by the user in a few minutes if you don't want it. I like mine. The Spyderco Manix II, Delica, Endura, Paramilitary, and Military are all good choices, some are a little pricier. The Benchmades and Kershaws suggested are great also.

Come back and post photos of both knives:thumbup:

You can get a Becker BK15 (awesome fixed blade)for about $40 on close out (msrp was more like $150) and a kershaw Junk Yard Dog 2 (great knife, and a manual) for about $70 if you surf around.
Two "wow" knives for 10% over budget.

You mentioned he likes hunting...why not a small skinner like a Bark River Mini Fox River or Woodland Special? These will set you back a little more than the $100 you are planning on spending, but here on our exchange, there was a Mini Fox River in the "step-up" steel (3v), for $115. Bark Rivers are nice looking knives and come with a lifetime warranty.

Stay away from anything Gerber. I've had too many of them fall apart on my or fail, I have a friend who was cut to the bone and needed 3 stitches when a Gerber frame lock knife failed. I kept giving them chances because of their looks and low price tags. But I finally decided to pay a little more. Long story short I fell in love with Spyderco. The sage series is my favorite but a bit more than $100. You may be able to find a sage 1 for that price (one of my favorites). I would look at the manix 2, delica 4, endura 4. Also check out the kershaw blur. If you think he'll put hard use on a knife, look at some cold steel modles such as the American lawman, ak47, recon one. The last 3 are all in the $40 range

You have a ton of good ideas. I do place a lot of faith in Spyderco.
What you're doing is a very nice thing. Have a nice Christmas.

My personal favorites are the Benchmade Griptilian and Spyderco Delica or Endura.

Those are in the price range and very versatile knives that would be suited to a wide number of tasks.

These are solid suggestions that would satisfy almost anyone.

The knife of his you describe, a $15 knife with a partially serrated blade and a textured plastic handle, is, statistically, most likely a cheap copy of a Spyderco Delica. This is a classic one-hand-opening lockback tactical folder. Assuming you stay in that format, the main questions, before picking brands and specific models, would be: 1a) will he be comfortable (or happy, or unhappy) using a different kind of blade locking mechanism (there are lockbacks, liner locks, frame locks, axis locks, and others), and, 1b) similarly for blade opening mechanism (thumb hole, thumb stud, flipper), then, 2) what handle material to get, and 3) do your state or local laws, or work environment, impose restrictions on blade length and such (also consider what he feels comfortable carrying - some don't blink at a 4"+ blade, others do).

For some clues on locking and opening mechanisms, you could find an excuse to have him let you use his knife to open something, then ask him how to open the knife, and try to discern if he likes or dislikes the way his current knife opens.

Staying under $100 (or just barely over), I'd look at my two long-time standbys Benchmade and Spyderco. Both have very good quality, good reputations, good support, and interesting designs.

The Benchmade Griptilian, 531 Pardue, and Presidio models are all nice knives. The Pardue is a bit thinner, lighter, and dagger shaped, while the other two are a bit beefier; these three cover most of what Benchmade offers in, or near, your price range. Spyderco, on the other hand, has lots of models to choose from... I'd probably vote for a Native or Stretch, in your price range, or a Paramilitary 2, if you can go a bit higher (it's a really sweet knife). And for a straight upgrade on (likely) his current knife, you can look at the Delica, or for same idea writ larger, the Endura.

For $120ish, you can have a little fun on Benchmade's website, and customize a Griptilian with a choice of opening mechanisms, blade types, handle colors, and even text and patterns on the blade. And the Griptilian is a good choice for a knife. (Hmm, looks like you can now also customize their Barrage models, including choice of blade color).

And praise be to you, for researching and getting your husband a knife - you and your husband are the envy of most of the folks here. My dearly departed wife got me a Strider SnG several Christmases back, out of the blue, which was one of the best presents ever.

Get him a spyderco paramilitary 2. It's going to be a bit more around 125 but it's the best knife for the price that is one of the best every day Cary knives, and this most people would agree on.

Hello everyone! I'm back with an update!
Today I went and bought a spyderco tenacious
It came in well under budget, but I think he'll still really enjoy it. With the extra money I think I'll get him some more outdoor stuff, maybe some camo gear or arrows for his bow.
Thank you all for your help! I'll update again after he opens it and let you know how he likes it!! :)
Thanks again!
