Knife Gift for Husband

How big is the knife he carries now? He'd probably be blown away by a zero tolerance 0566, a spyderco military, or a spyderco paramilitary. You could also get a really good fixed blade knife seeing as he always has one close. Maybe an esee 4. Full lifetime warranty, no questions asked, he can beat the living hell out of it and if he ever finds a way to break it, they'll replace it. Combine that knife with something like a Kershaw scrambler or chill and it'll make a very good Christmas for about 130 bucks and he gets two very good knives, one folder and one fixed blade knife, and both have really good warranty services should he ever need it.

I know that it's a little above what you were thinking of spending but I'm sure he'd love both of em.

ontario rat folding knives also get really stellar reviews for the price, about 30 bucks, too.

How do we all feel about "Spyderco Endura Flat Ground, VG10 Satin Plain Blade, Black FRN Handle".
It is $115 on sale for $65.
Also I am interested in the Kershaw ones, but I don't think I like the assisted opening ones, can anyone suggest one that's just normal opening? Or do they not offer that?

The Endura gets generally very positive reviews here. I carried one for a few years and really liked it. That sounds like a great price.

I'm also not a fan of assisted openers. Kershaw does offer manual openers, but a large portion of their knives are AOs. I'd take a look at a store like New Graham's or knifecenter.com and look at the Kershaw offerings to see what catches your eye. You can come back and ask about it here.

$65 is around the normal price for a regular Endura. $115 is the MSRP, and most of the reputable dealers don't charge that.
Another key question is size & weight. What is the blade length you think he would like? And would he mind something that takes up a lot of pocket space?

And something that just crossed my mind, you can find a little cheaper folding knife and have it engraved with something, that's usually a pretty nice thing. Something like world's best husband or something.

The Endura is an excellent option that will serve him well. You might also look at the Delica if he prefers something a bit smaller.

Don't know about her husband, but I am not a fan of that stuff. I find it kind of tacky, but YMMV.

Thank you for the heads up regarding the price. I don't think he'd mind something a little larger /heavier. Even if it's not something that he carries around every single day, but has other applications, I'd be okay with that

That's a good idea! I think whatever I get I'll have it engraved with his initials or name or something :)

You can stop right there with the Endura.
It's about the same size as what he has now and is a great knife without being a budget buster or a showoff knife.
It will last longer than a lifetime and is appropriate for anyone not yet into "steel snobbery" or ninja stuff.

He WILL use it.

:)

The Endura can also be had with a stainless steel handle in a price range that's very close to what you found. The Benchmade Griptilian model 551 fits within your budget and has a more of a drop point blade which a hunter would be familiar with.

As has been noted there are a lot of choices in your price range. My suggestion would be to go with a more traditional style, and forget the serrations. I carry these two knives a lot out in the woods here in Western Washington. They are special editions, but you can still find them for the price you're looking at.

Another good pattern would be a single bladed knife like this Case:

A less well known company, but they make very good knives, is Knives of Alaska. I carried this hunter for a long time, but now have moved on to something more attractive.

There are a several companies online that can help you find something nice at a good price and who support this forum. I use "Knives Ship Free" and "Collectors Knives" for many of the new ones I buy. They're very good people, give them a look.

Whatever you choose, you're husband will cherish. Merry Christmas!

Hey Sullivan, when you do decide on a knife and looking to buy it, don't forget about the exchange rate and check what they charge for shipping. Some knife venues charge more for shipping to Canada than others. Or you can buy from Canadian online venues. Or, depending where you are and what stores are around you, a retail store might be able to order in the knife you want. Good Luck!

If he's OK with heavier I would go with the 0566 (as long as he won't mind it being assisted) The lock side also gives a nice canvass for any engraving that you may want to do.
Also you get a much bigger "Wow factor" with the ZT over an Endura. Because, lets face it, the FRN Endura (Delica too) is a great knife for the money, but it's extremely "blah" in the looks department.

You could also check out some of cold steels offerings. I would recommend the recon line (recon, mini recon, etc).

Very tough knives.

But I think a good Spydie is probably your best bet. Everyone is suggesting the endura/delica line, but why not go a little better and grab a sage 1? Now THATS a knife that will blow him away. And it can be found for around the 100 mark

Kershaw are good options as well, but most of them are going to be assisted. Zt's are usually more expensive, but you could get a 566 for around 110 if you look hard enough. And you could deassisted it VERY easily. Or even a 0770cf for around 120ish. But this one doesn't really like to be deassisted....

The 0770cf is on the left and the middle one is a 0566. Both great knives

The Kershaw/Emerson collabs are not assisted and they come in at under $100. The Manix 2 is a great knife, but it's wide in the pocket because of the leaf-shaped blade. That may or may not make any difference. There are some very nice traditional styles available, some that lock open. ESEE will have a couple of folders available in your price range, as will Buck. All of these brands are available from Warriors and Wonders, a Canadian seller that has the knives in stock already in Canada.

When considering peoples suggestions and the knives you see on the internet, my advice is to check to make sure that the knife you are considering is legal in Canada before you buy off the internet.

I don't know Canada's knife laws, so I am reluctant to recommend a knife because I don't know if it would be legal there.

Good luck in your search. I'm sure your husband will be very happy with whatever knife you get him.

J, I think a lot depends on your husbands tastes. Me, I'm more a traditional guy and prefer a pocket knife with personality and something I'll keep forever. Just as I get a "patina" as I age, so will a favorite knife. I prefer wood or bone handles. I've become enamored with Great Eastern Cutlery knifes. Collectorknives.com has a good selection of various knives that any knife lover would be happy with.
