Knife gift from people that no nothing about knives...

Been there! While as one poster said, it is the thought that counts, my family has stopped buying me knives because they know I am a knife snob. My mother however started a tradition when I was young of buying me a knife and a flashlight for birthday and Christmas. We gone from the Ever-ready and an old timer to Surefire Aviator and Benchmade 520 Presidio. Good luck with the MTech.

By now my family and friends know I'm a fanatic, so they won't dare buy me a knife unless they have a picture with a manufacturer and model.

But years ago on two separate occasions my parents bought me folding knives as gifts.

The first was a Case stag handled Shark Tooth folder that I got for Christmas when I was about 18, even though it was expensive ( to them)they "thought I should have a good knife".

It's one of my prized possessions.

The other I got about 15 years ago. It was a small no-name lock-back folder that they picked up at a hardware store counter display. "They thought I'd like it." It's equally prized....

yep, its good to have people that care and realize what we like even if they dont know too much themselves.

I couldn't agree more. To me, the fact that someone cares enough to choose something that they really think I'd like means so much more than the item itself. Even if it's not something I would have chosen myself, any gift that was given to me with that sentiment will be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

So far nobody has bought me a knife because they think I own too many. But they have given me knife related stuff such as sharpening stones, and most of these were junk, but the cutting board gift is very useful.

I have received some cheap knives, particularly from an Uncle who IS into knives. I am grateful and appreciative for the gift.

I feel the same way. One friend of mine, after giving him some pretty nice productions, gave me some Franklin Mint junkers. I just re gift them. He had no malice in his gift giving. My little brother gave me a Winchester fixed blade one year, I use that in my fishing rotation.

this past christmas i got a cheap folder from my freind that found it in a tattoo and peircing place...all plastic handles with really skinny little liners...a thin liner lock...half serrated...mystery stainless...a real beauty.

i looked it over, cut up some packaging with it, and clipped it to my pocket. when they left, it went into my beater drawer with the rest of the knives that aren't good for much but scaring sheeple and handing to someone that wants to borrow a knife...

My family is educated just enough to know they can't buy a knife without knowing it's something I specifically desire. They know I'm a snob. I have gotten great gifts related to knife stuff, though. I got the "Knives 2005" book, and a really cool LED Flashlight. They take the time to find out what I like, as I do with their gifts.

My wife just says, "Pick out a knife for yourself. Your limit is..."

I guess no surprises is okay for now, but I look forward to the day when my sons and I can exchange knife gifts. They will be educated!

There are some ugly knives out there. Enjoy them for throwing! At least least you'll get some enjoyment out of the gifts!

Two knives from my mom when she went to Mexico. There is a bottle opener on the blade. The blades have no edge to speak of. I can not tell what metal they are made of except the brass eagle head.

My father worked for a moving company and during a lot of my childhood he was away much of the time. Everytime he'd come back he'd bring me one of those cheap tiny souvenir slipjoints. They couldn't cut butter but i felt all grownup carrying one around in my pocket. Later as i neared my teen years i progressed to quality knives but for me that was the real start of my knife collecting hobby.
Also My mother surprised me back in the Christmas of 2000 with two slipjoints. She has no real knowledge of cutlery and knows i am picky about knives and usually doesn't buy any for me, actually she almost didn't give me those two because she though i wouldn't like them because they were "cheap" (meaning she purchased them inexpensively not that they were poor quality). Our local Walmart had just liquidated their stock of U.S Schrade knives. The day she was shopping they had found a few display models (no boxes) poked away in a cabinet. I think she paid a total of 20 dollars for the two of them. One was a carbon steel Trapper and the other one of those staglon uncle henry Stockmans. Both are really great knives, i especially love the Stockman! So sometimes you can end up with good knives even if the giver is not an knife aficionado!
:)

My family and friends already think I have to many knives. I tend to buy really nice knives for other people who don't usually apreciate them like I do. I have gotten better at it though. When I was 10 I got my mom a really nice throwing knife for mothers day(stainless ,swedish and about 40$). Now I get them nice kitchen knives and get less funny looks.

There are 2 junker knives that really mean something to me. One is a dagger from a family friend who knows good wilderness knives but bought me this nonetheless (I don't know why) and a good friend from my Ju-jitsu class bought me a dagger from the Great Wall of China- the fact that he thought of me on the great wall of China makes me feel special. My girlfriend buys me CRKT almost exclusively as she then knows if I have a specific model or not.

Wow, sounds like a cool mom if you can get her throwing knife! If I got my mom a throwing knife, she'd have thrown it at me then thrown me!

Have you ever seen that video where the chump on TV is demonstrating how tough the sword he is selling is? He pounds it on the table and the end snaps off and flips around, stabbing him in the stomach.

I got one of those as a gift.
Esav - now that you have the sword, don't you pound it on the table!

When I was really young one of my aunts went to Switzerland and brought back 3 small SAK's for me and my brothers... I lost mine (I was like 5 years old -- maybe younger!).

I believe I had a small slipjoint when I was 4 in Iran, which was probably given to me by my mother... I was 4, so don't expect me to remember correctly.

Got this sweet knife from my brother-in-law a couple of years ago cuz he heard they were good:

(Try not to be jealous.) It's made out of the SuperMetal Rostfrei.

And I occasionally get promo knives from companies after they find out I'm a knife knut. The SAKs aren't so bad but they get outweighed by the utter junk companies hand out.:(

i was given a nice lil Swiss army knife (two blades) when i went into scouts. for my highschool gaduation, im prolly going to get the new g-10 offset
