hey, so i was wondering has anyone done any little necker type knives like this that i just drew up a second ago? i saw a picture where a guy used a lanyard as a handle and i thought about modifying it a bit to make it more stable in ahnd. thered be a finger hole for your index finger and then make the spine thick enough to put your thumb on it to push against the pressure created by the lanyard pulling at the base of the blade. thered be a big bead or something at the end of the lanyard which would be pressing against your pinky and edge of your hand. i know this is a terrible explanation but i drew the picture in like 30min so its just a fledgling idea and i havent flushed it out yet, so just wondering

That actually reminds me of a punch knife, if you peruse it, check for legality in your area.

I could see it being potentially useful for cutting soft materials with a Wharncliffe or hawkbill blade shape.

youd still hold it like a regular knife though. it wouldnt go between your fingers. i didnt know what a push knife, well their name until now, but good idea for me to look into the legality of it...and yea, it wouldnt be for anything tough or heavy. it would just be nice cause it could be super light and the lanyard handle makes it flexible and saves space and the big bead on the end might really help the stability. im gonna try and make it here in the next month. it would be my first knife. but theres a machine shop, design warehouse near me called "maker space" and they have cnc machines and all sorts of other production machines, its really cool. costs $50 a month and you can use everything there. they have every type of program youd ever want and 3d printers. pretty cool

I think the Buck Hartsook was meant to be used like that, but there was no finger hole. Personally, I don't like that kind of thing.
Better to save weight by going slimmer, or thinner stock, IMO.

its not so much about weight but size and shape. youd be getting a 2 inches of useable blade with only 3 inches of metal

I have a Cold Steel Mini Tac Skinner that I rigged up with a fat paracord lanyard stiffened with a little silicone self fusing tape . This gave me such a good grip that I can hold even with just two fingers - in back of the sub hilt .

So , I believe your design could work -given a substantial lanyard to grip !

Have you researched the "pinch knives" used by OSS agents in WW2 ?

Yes, but don't forget the lanyard bulk, & extra height due to the lanyard hole. Anyway, best of luck. Hope the idea works.

thanks man. not saying its gonna change the game or anything, its just a simple design for my first try at this whole knife thing and a little out of the box, to make it more fun i guess....we'll see!!! i actually need suggestions on wat kind of steel and where to get it. any thoughts?

Simple carbon steel like 1075 is good & cheap. you can HT it yourself with rudimentary equipment, which saves more still.
Design questions are fun.

If you are interested in design suggestions, I have one. Sorry I can't draw on a computer, so I will try to use words.
Assuming the bottom pic is the current draft.
The inside of the hole looks good, but the outside, where the second finger will sit, is rounded the wrong way & will create some instability.
Try to give the outside of the ring a bit of arc, so the second finger has a stable hold.

yea, its by no means the final design. just a thought, ya know? i saw someone elses pic and kind of had a little inspiration. but i love hearing feedback on what other people think would work well, what they dig, what they dont like, etc... so thanks man....i was just doing some technical drawings for another project ive got going and so i was in the mood to put something on paper rather than CAD.

but you mean at the bottom of the ring? smooth it out, make it flatter you mean, so that it will be more stable in between the index and middle fingers?

heres what i was working on before. i was an idiot and cut myself sharpening my knife and got a huge drop of blood on it, so i had to start over but i was probably a good idea since the one is completely to scale. its a golf bag if your wondering. where you clip the clubs in instead of drop them in. its totally open, the clubs are completely static because theyre clipped in on the shaft and the handles are in the little cups at the bottom, but they dont bump into each other cause of it. i always thought it was nuts that guys pay thousands of dollars for their clubs and the way they let them just knock one another so violently. well enough with the golf bag talk. gonna be working on both at the same time

Nice idea on the club holder. Should be a lot lighter, too.
Yeah, bottom of the ring (as oriented in the pic). Anything to make it more stable against the side of the middle finger would be a great thing.

Look at the Boker Gnome, and the SURVIVE! necker. They do something similar, but not identical to what you envision.

The Survive! Knives v1 necker is nearly exactly what you have drawn above and is meant to be used in the same way. Someone beat you to the drawing board, my friend.

Forget the drawings. Mock one up out of cardboard, or, better yet, something more rigid.

It looks like one of those things that MIGHT work on paper, then fails catastrophically in actual use.

That is, if I understand what you are talking about. Almost like a cable tang, but with your hand replacing the handle.

Almost. But I THINK he is saying take that, add a fob (its a fob not a lanyard, by the way) to it with a big doohickey/bead on the the end. That bead is held up against your pinky whne you press forward on the knife using your index finger, making the fob taut?

I'm not fully grasping it....ooh I made a funny. Wasn't even trying!

Most of the pictures I've seen of peoples' S!K neckers have the fob tied, so that the knife can be used in that exact way. So, the similarity to me jumped out immediately. To my understanding, they have a second version with an actual handle now, which is pretty neat looking.

As for me? Now, I can't speak for other folks, but I can tell you that I'm going to pass on anything that doesn't have a proper handle. In fact, the only knife I can think of in my collection that doesn't have at least a three-finger grip is my ESEE Candiru, and I got it because, come on, Candiru!
