Knife Ideas for daughter

Really? Not one person suggested a Smatchet? No one? I don't even know where I am anymore! :rolleyes:o_O:p

But seriously, for a young person, I'd suggest a Delica (or other smaller sized Spyderco, as there are several), or perhaps something the lines of a Mini Griptilian, or even maybe a Buck Bantam. My Scouts all enjoyed the Bantams I got them all for Christmas one year!

S110V Blurple G10 would be even nicer.

Edit:

Idea: RIT dye an FRN Chaparral.

The first knife I got my daughter was a Buck Alpha through knivesshipfree.com's "Kid's First Knife" program. They even laser engraved her name on it. That was when she was about 5 yrs old and she is 10 now. Since then I got her a Case Peanut, but I felt the blades were too "snappy" for her little fingers so I appropriated that one to my collection and got her an Ontario RAT II folder. I also got her a Mora Companion that she really likes a lot. The last knife I got her is more of a collectible and we keep it put up, but she can look at it anytime she wants. It's a mint condition 1978 Schrade Sharpfinger Scrimshaw with a Grizzly Bear on the faux ivory handle. It's a very cool knife and I know she will really appreciate that one someday. The RAT II is a great knife for kids I think but knivesshipfree.com used to list a bunch of reasons why they opted for the Buck Alpha folder as a kid's first knife and they were all sound reasons. It's nice that we have so many great options these days!

My oldest daughter is 12 next month. She's shown herself very responsible, and she's asked for a pocket knife for her birthday. (She's had a SAK for a few years now and has done very well with it.) She would like something with a clip and something that can be opened with 2 hands. She does not want a flipper. She prefers blue, but it's not necessary.

I was leaning towards a Spyderco DF2 or Delica. While those are still on the table, she didn't prefer them by appearance. It must lock, and I would really prefer something in the realm of 2.75-3.25 inch blade. I would greatly value your suggestions.

I'd still get her a Delica. As Spyderco says "form follows function." I gave a tween a Delica and they love it. They wanted and got the combo edge.

Too funny, I clicked on this thread to make that suggestion. I'm finishing one right now and my daughter loves it, but she's a little older.

I think a Spyderco Salt worn IWB with a deep pocket clip is ideal for a young woman.

Their clothes don't have pockets like most men do and you can wear a lightweight, rustproof Salt knife IWB in shorts, yoga pants, jogging pants, scrubs, a suit, etc.

Pick your bladeshape - Salt 2, Tasman, Wharncliffe, etc.

The new LC200N in green is pretty cool.

Opinel no7 comes in an array of colors got one for 4 of my kids, the 7 year old got a no6

Delica will work just fine. The Dragonfly is a tad too small, but that’s subjective of course. The Delica affords a more positive grip. She’ll likely still use it many years down the road.

If I have kids someday, daughter probably gets a Delica and the son gets an Endura (my first real knife from my Dad). And maybe both get ESEE Izulas for Christmas lol.

I bought the pink spyderco native about 11 years ago and gave it to my daughter a couple of months back when she turned 14. Before that she had an opinel nr8.
https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=366

It supports women in their fight against cancer (Guardians of the Ribbon/Pink Heals Tour) which I liked.

Turns out she really loves the knife and the fact that is has a nice point. and of course, which girl doesn't like pink ;)
The esee izula (1st gen) in pink with paracord wrap has also come into her possession shortly after.

I have a pink strider pt for her, but I'm saving that for later.

I got my daughter a Kizer Mini Domin in purple. She loves it. It's cute and compact. It snaps open nicely with the thumb studs and locks up solidly. It's nowhere near as slicey as a Delica but it works for her level of use. It's also less expensive. I like the idea of starting out on budget gear. The N690 has good corrosion resistance and edge retention perks up with subsequent sharpening.

Here is a picture of the blue one:

Myself, I came in here to recommend the little KaBar Dozier Folding Hunter in blue with AUS-8.

Had no idea that the Kizer Mini Domin even existed. I think this is a fabulous recommendation. Seems about perfect, really. Price is right too.

The little Dozier in AUS-8 is insanely easy to maintain. It gets very sharp with seriously little effort. And it's like $20 for one. Nice for learning to sharpen.

Amazingly enough, you could have both of these pieces for under $80. Give her the one she wants and keep the other one! :D

For my younger grandkids I got them a Buck Bantum mainly because they are low cost but still good decent 420hc steel and sturdy enough for general tasks. If they loose them it’s not a big loss and if they break them the forever warranty is tops.

For my older grandkids I got them a Buck 112 slim select and they love them. They go fishing regularly and camping and they put them to good use. My granddaughter is in college and is very avid at using her knife. She loves it and almost always has it with her.

I got my daughter a purple Delica. I didn't appreciate the color until I had it in hand. Now I have a purple knife or two.

I have one of those AUS-8 Doziers. In the $20 and under club, it's an all-star. It has gotten a lot of random use and now lives in my wife's glove compartment. Their AUS-8 doesn't seem as good as what you get on an Ontario Rat but it's well ahead of the sub-8Cr steels common to that price range. (Ontario's AUS-8 is among the better examples of that steel.) My main complaint is the stiff back-lock action. It's really not designed to flick out like the Rat or the Mini Domin.
