Knife Ideas for My Nephew

Hi Everyone,

I am considering getting some knives for my nephew. He is in his mid-teens and is a very outdoorsy type of person. I have spoken with his mother, and she has given her approval for me to move forward with this project.
At this point, he is heavily involved in scouting and is very close to earning his Eagle rank.

I do know that he owns a SAK, but I don't know which model. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only knife he owns. Any ideas or recommendations?

Well, right off I was going to suggest a Victorinox Trekker. But since he already has a SAK, and you don't know which model, that's out.

You do say knives. So I would suggest pairing a hefty 7" to 9" with a smaller more nimble 3" to 4". The former capable of heavier tasks - chopping, battoning etc, the latter flat grind and blade profile suited to finer tasks. Some caveats; no choils and some form of guard whether it is an added cross guard or integral at the lower portion where blade meets handle.

Someone had me design a blade for a boy scout earlier this year. I tried to come up with a design that would inspire adventure and confidence. Mix between a spear point and Kephart for the blade shape. Sorry, the pics aren't the best.

Made a matching ferro rod.

ATS34 steel, Hitatchi's version of 154CM. I don't make a lot of knives and I bought a lot of it from Niagara when 154CM got hard to find.

I make most of the handle material I use.

Sheath came out nice. Ferro rod holder was a bit of ostrich I had.

Like suggested, a 9-10" camp knife or even a small chopper machete like the Condor Mini Duku or Terava Skrama 240, paired with a 4" fixed bade. A Kephart was a good suggestion, there are too many choices to list. Add a Silky Gomboy.

Do you have a price point in mind?

The Mora Companion is an inexpensive classic.
The Mora Garberg is a nice slid knife for about $100

The Becker BK16 is pretty popular. I like the BK18 Harpoon a little better. The BK19 Nesmuk is a classic design that has been around for a century or two. All of these share handle scales and you can replace the smooth plastic, Grivory, for micarta from Ka-Bar/Becker.

I like the Terrava Jaakaaripuuko, both the 110mm and the 140..
The Terrava Skrama in either 240mm or 200mm is a very nice large chopping knife.
These are both available from varestuleka.com The puuko 110 (or the smaller 85mm) would pair well with one of the skramas. Smaller knife for more fine tasks and carving, big knife for chopping and other tasks needing a larger blade.

Nice job....👍👍👍

Danny Linguini Danny Linguini thank you for the very kind words. Now that you mention it I can’t think of a single person who has successfully pecced one of my knives.

norcalAF norcalAF thank you for the shout out.

This is a K-Slick mini I am up late working on for the Ameliasburgh Fall Fair on Saturday. You could say I’m cramming for it.

It’s a food prep or edc knife primarily, but I also make outdoor knives. I like all types of knives.

I have been vibing with the cold steel ultimate hunter.

And It works really well as a bushcraft knife. And has a rock solid lock and feel.

Now. For a kid who may not want to be running around with a fixed blade on his hip. This knife will kind of do the fixed stuff. And kind of do the pocket knife stuff. (Could be a bit smaller)

And would transition in to an adult EDC knife fairly well.

And you can get them with orange handles. So it would be harder to loose.

Small thin fixie, David Mary would be perfect. Good idea. Others I would consider are a Buck 102 or 117. Something stainless.

I'mma recommend you some sort of Mora, they're great cutters with a comfortable handle and IF it should get lost, it won't hurt too bad :)

Although I'm sure if you know your nephew will appreciate the knife a lot, get him a custom from the wonderful people here :)
