Knife Ideas for My Nephew

Brisa Trooper
Carves like a Scandi, cuts like a saber, good purchase on the canvas scales wet or dry, 5/32 stock 80crv2 , 4.5 inch blade, quality heavy leather sheath. Perfect camp knife to pair with a hatchet or saw.
Definitely what I would choose, the other suggestions are also good, but for the price this can’t be beat.IMG_1206.jpeg

I’d suggest a Mora 510 Companion to start out with for a fixed blade since he’s got a pocket knife already, they’re pretty maintenance free, the handle has a grippy texture to it for better control, they sharpen easy and come in a bunch of different color combos. Priced pretty cheap too so you aren’t dumping $200+ on a handmade fixed blade from the forum makers yet before finding out how he’s going to use it, abuse it, or maintain it.

Or lose it. I'm all for a DM custom on both counts, but I might go the with cheap chopper and a Mora as well. If he still has them when he makes Eagle - give him the customs

You got a lot of fixed blade ideas, but I would recommend a nice Great Eastern Cutlery folder.

I have given them as gifts to young and old and everyone loves a GEC!
Bear in mind he already has a SAK, we just don't know which one it is.

Someone had me design a blade for a boy scout earlier this year. I tried to come up with a design that would inspire adventure and confidence. Mix between a spear point and Kephart for the blade shape. Sorry, the pics aren't the best.

Made a matching ferro rod.

ATS34 steel, Hitatchi's version of 154CM. I don't make a lot of knives and I bought a lot of it from Niagara when 154CM got hard to find.

I make most of the handle material I use.

Sheath came out nice. Ferro rod holder was a bit of ostrich I had.

You're a show off! In other words outstanding work, Sir.

Hi Everyone,

I am considering getting some knives for my nephew. He is in his mid-teens and is a very outdoorsy type of person. I have spoken with his mother, and she has given her approval for me to move forward with this project.
At this point, he is heavily involved in scouting and is very close to earning his Eagle rank.

I do know that he owns a SAK, but I don't know which model. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only knife he owns. Any ideas or recommendations?
The first thing I'd recommend is a customized buck spitfire. The colors are up to you. But I would definitely have the engraving recognize his award of Eagle Scout Rank. It is a significant positive achievement. (and looks pretty darn good on a resume too!)

I concur (Eagle Scout here) it is over a decade of hard work and commitment. I was honored by my cousin and asked to speak at his Eagle ceremony, and it left my eyes a little misty. In case y'all didn't know, Eagle Scout will get you your first rank in any of the armed services if you join ☺️.

As a Maker myself.....I'm recommending the Becker 62,_Kephart knife.
It's a solid choice. It will teach good knife maintenance, easy to sharpen, looks great, reasonable costs, performs Amazing, available, and fits a variety of hands.....probably the Best knife design.

If scouting is a passion for him, maybe check with his scout leaders to see what is allowed for him to carry while on ‘official trips’. I would also consider his other outdoor interests and maybe get a blade tailored more to those endeavors (fishing/hunting/hiking/etc).
Also, a quality multi tool is a must-have.

I use a multitool for grabbing when I do stuff with fire.

Which for a while I was kind of like, pliers? Why?

Well. So I don't burn myself constantly. That's why.

I really like the Gerber center drive. Bigger knife, one handed sprung pliers, a bit driver that takes normal bits.

Pliers are so overlooked at times. I admit that I have used my Charge + much more than my old Wave’s simply because of the easy one handed opening while my other hand is occupied (plus it is orange and easy to see on the ground in brush/snow).

When I get ready to head to the woods, I put on a fixed blade and my multi-tool before I get other gear. Just super useful.

I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend you consider a para 3. He would probably like a fixed blade too, but a beater fixed blade might suit him better at his age. I feel like most teenagers will like the cool factor of a spyderco - and on your end you know he has both gateway knives to the hobby.

A good friend of mine has a son that received his Eagle Scout honors and I tried to think of a solid functional knife to give him and ended up giving him an Esee 6. I knew he loved to camp and went often. I think that there are a lot of good knives you could give him, have fun shopping and selecting a knife, you could even take him with you
Or ask him what he wants.

There are also Boy Scout editions that SAK makes. Unfortunately mine disappeared during one of many moves for military duty. I keep hoping it will turn up, my Dad gave it to me when I made Eagle 😞

Don't ever give up. It may turn up.

The knife my father gave me disappeared halfway through Basic Training, and I found another guy with it at the end of AIT. He refused to return it until I threatened to beat him senseless with a rifle barrel.

HI Guys. Sorry about asking the question and then disappearing. I have a lot of branding irons in the fire right now.
All of you have given me great ideas. Many things to think about.

I still don't know which SAK he has. I recently ordered a Cadet and a Pioneer. I figured he does not have any Alox, so he can have one of those if he wants.

I have decided to offer him a few items so he will have his bases covered. My goal was three knives. Small folder, large folder, and fixed. Nothing very expensive because I don't know if he will take care of them.

Because of you, I have added a Multi-tool (I have lots of Gerbers).

Will keep you updated. Thank you for all the suggestions. Most were nicer knives than I own.

I have been looking at the Kershaw Iridium as a work knife. Around $50 with D2. Might fill one of the spots in your list.

I also like the idea of an Alox, maybe more of a gentleman knife size for more formal occasions.

I also made it to Eagle and it is a honor that is becoming more rare as time goes on.
