Knife Ideas for My Nephew

I have been looking at the Kershaw Iridium as a work knife. Around $50 with D2. Might fill one of the spots in your list.

I also like the idea of an Alox, maybe more of a gentleman knife size for more formal occasions.

I also made it to Eagle and it is a honor that is becoming more rare as time goes on.
One of our clients has an Iridium. Nice knife for the money.

As for the Alox, I feel that the Cadet is a compromise Alox. It doesn't "print" in your pocket very much and still gives you a blade you can do something with. Small enough to have on a keychain, too.

I tip my hat to you, sir, for achieving the rank of Eagle. I never made it past Cub Scouts.

SAKs are mostly symbolism in camp, my pops has survived with a huntsman for as long as I've been alive. And yes us Eagle Scouts are unfortunately becoming a rare bird 😔

My first thought was Becker BK62 Kephart, or any Kephart for that matter, there are a lot of good ones around, but the Becker is a good value.
A few that haven’t been mentioned:
For a budget, Green River 4215 fish knife. Pair it with a short Kabar sheath.
Peltonen Sissipuuko.

Unless it’s a gift for something like a birthday or promotion I would send him a few pictures of some knives in the budget that I wanted to spend and let him pick. If it’s a knife that HE really likes he will most likely take better care of it and keep it. Or if you guys live in an area that you guys can go put hands on some knives that could be a good time for both of you.

Why not build one from a kit? The steels kit knives use is usually 440C but you can get has some in 154CM made in USA. If that's a no go, I would suggest a good Ti framelock, with about a 3.5 inch blade and of course a sharpening stone or steel. The David Mary or other Custom fixed blade is also a good plan too. Keeping in mind that even the most conscientious teenager will loose things.IMG_0371.JPEG

I was going to suggest a kit knife! Jantz has some nice patterns in their Jantz Pattern Series (36 was my favorite before making my own blades!) and use decent steel, good grinds on them. Or the swedish style Puukko kits like Lauri, Brisa, Helle, etc. Knifekits has some nice designs like the fixed blade Donnord posted! You can also get premade leather sheaths or leather kit sheaths that basically just need to be stitched up; holes are predrilled and sew very easily. Stay away from the cheaper kits; many use softer steel that will not hold an edge very well. The first few kits I did were a huge disappointment; the edges did not stay sharp at all and the grinds were wonky and sloppy.

Add some micarta handle scales, G10 or Micarta pins (easier to work with than metal pins for a beginner!) and some epoxy and you are good to go! Drill press makes drilling the handle material stay square, but you can shape the scales with hacksaw, files and sandpaper if needed. Or a Dremel works well for that on a budget!

Maybe pick up a Dremel and their drill press stand for him? He can do a lot of projects with those! Sharpening setup is always a good idea!

When my 4 nephews were young (3 or 4? LOL), they started getting knives, parents kept them until they got older though and only could use them when supervised (they went camping and fishing). I did some machete kits for them (edges were blunted and rounded!!) and I did folder kits for the older ones when they were a few years old as well. Picked up a Case Large Jigged Bone stockman for all of them, myself and my brother, too. So they all have a Case Stockman (another great knife by the way for a boyscout!), a few folders, I think a Multi tool and a custom Fixed blade in Magnacut and may be getting custom hatchets for Christmas this year if their parents allow!

Hi Everyone,

I have decided to just pass on some knives that I already own to my nephew and fill things out just a little.

Here is the list of things to get him started:

1. SAK Cadet
2. Kershaw 1986WM RJ Martin design knife. It has a subdued blade with a flipper liner lock. This is a knife that I was given and was excess to my needs, and I had already promised it to my nephew.
3. Kershaw 1987 RJ Martin design flipper knife. The baby brother of the larger 1986WM. Same design but smaller. 8Cr13MoV steel. 3-inch blade.
4. Kershaw1730BWH3. Also, an RJ Martin design. This is nothing more than an overseas version of the US-made Kershaw Zing 1735. The US version is a wonderful knife, but the Asian production is lacking. It came with the 1730BWH3 as a package deal.
5. Flytanium Lightning Bug flashlight. 180 Lumens, CREE LED, AAA powered.
6. Gerber MP 600 Multi-tool.
7. To round things out a little more, there is a Maxam fixed blade #SKEDC that is finishing the list. It sure looks like an F1 pilot survival knife, but just bigger.
