Knife/knives you regret buying

I was also in high school in 1980 but I spent my $45 on a Gerber magnum folding hunter. Yes, $39.95 was a good chunk of money for high school me. It was my first "good" knife and I still have it, so I guess I don't regret the purchase.

Those finger grooves are something else!

I only regret selling. Specifically a custom Demko AD-15 that I bought direct from him when they first came out for $600. And an old pivot Umnumzaan that I scored for $385 😱 Even the ones I bought and didn’t like, I had to learn why I didn’t like them so I don’t regret that process.

A good number of Randalls and a couple of CRKs. Lusted after all of them, had to sell all of them in hard times. I'll probably never spend more than about $200 on a knife ever again, and I am at the point where I have a knife for just about every need I'll ever have. But then there are the knives that I.might not need, but want. 🤣

Or the ones you didnt know you need, like the mutilator ^😉

around $250, usually more like $200, is my max right now as well.
the diminishing returns after that is not something i enjoy enough to justify the expenditure.

I thought I needed a really nice overbuilt folder. Now I have a Medford that's only ever sat in my safe. The quality is amazing, but I knew as soon as I got it in my hand I was never going to carry it. I have a number of folders, but the old plastic handled Benchmade griptilian is still what I like the best. I have a lot of nice 4-5 inch fixed blades. None that I really regret, just have too many now. At some point I should sell off the ones I don't use. Our tastes can change, sometimes you find a design that's just what you want and now your other knives not as great anymore. At least we still have a useful tool though.

I bought a MutilatorView attachment 2941934. Not sure why. I thought it needed more serrations.
I was 14yo when I was looking those on e-bay thinking they are coolest thing ever... and they were actually too expensive for me back then (7€ was a lot for me as a 14yo, plus I had no idea how to even shop online, I'd have to ask my older friend to order me one)...

Thank God I never got one 🤣

Any knife I ever purchased from a maker later found to be of less than stellar character. Anything else can be dealt with directly with the vendor, or the maker...usually successfully. Sometimes you find out that you didn't know what you didn't know.
Perhaps a knife brand whose name rhymes with David Hasselhoff’s 1982 TV series featuring a high tech car?

Knife regrets are rare for me since I know my preferences already well (usually) and I like to research the knife before buying.

I regret the Cold Steel GI tanto a bit since the handle and crossguard weren’t too comfy, but it’s not too bad since it’s fairly cheap. Decent tough, fun to whack around knife too.

I think I am in the accumulation camp mentioned above. I don't think I have any single individual knife regrets, but now I just have too many and as also mentioned, would wind up selling at a loss. Never considered them to be an investment, just a fun hobby. I tend to go overboard with hobbies though.

I’ll go against the grain here, but I regret buying most of them. I never wanted a knife “collection”. I just happened to acquire one over time as I was figuring out what really worked for my daily uses. The upside, I’ve got lots of nice, mostly unused giveaways to gift to others. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve loved pocket knives ever since I can remember. I think they are a right of passage and every man (and woman) should carry one. Just not a fan of dozens of knives sitting unused in drawers, boxes, etc.

The knife I regret buying was one of the newer cold steel master tantos.. Compared to my pre 1990 version, this is nothing more than a damn paperweight and the sheath is worse than some of the ballistic nylon sheaths I have seen on the imported versions.

Sadly - CS has really went bad in recent years...
To be fair, I think the OG models are still okay. SRK, Recon Tanto, your classic Demko/Wallace folders, etc. I haven’t read/heard any Schrade horror stories about those old guard models yet.

I’m reluctant to try the new models though, after Mr. Thompson is no longer at the helm. I’m perfectly happy with the old warhorses.
