Knife lube?

I can only say that at no time has any knife I've oiled with olive oil smelled bad or become gummy. The amount of oil I apply is about two or three drops from the tip of a bamboo skewer applied to the pivot area.

I've never had any negative results from using olive oil. Not that there aren't better oils out there that last longer and don't break down as quickly, but that's a different issue.

I ride this hobby horse about once a year, touting the safety of olive oil. Someone will inevitably come along and tell their story of olive oil going rancid in their pocketknife or, more commonly, in the knife of someone they know. I just dont believe it.

So you have no idea if it's rancid or not?

 I only know this line of questioning has become rancid. You may now put your head down on your desk and sit out the rest of class, Billy.

Interesting article about people who like rancid olive oils cause they are used to it. There's even more resources about fake olive oil products being sold too.

But yea, research isn't a good idea? And just making claims without researching, is a good idea? See why I'm asking the questions like I have.

I don't understand the human race.

You tell us your opinion is basically fact. Without knowing anything about it.

Was wondering what you guys use for lube on those folders. I run all my guns on Mobile One but it seems a bit “heavy” on my pocket folders. It also attracts a lot of gunk from the pocket but I’m not sure I can get away from that regardless of lube type.

I use baby oil on my guns, fishing tackle, knives and in the house..

Over many years I have not identified any problems with using baby oil on said things.

This is true, many moons ago we used to use a feather dipped lightly in paraffin to lubricate the movement of a Westminster Chimes mantle shelf clock which is still ticking away today, alas at the house of a relative who purloined it.

If you look into it they are saying not to use baby oil...... on a baby. Same thing for baby aspirin and baby powder. Something is right for 20 years then it wrong for 20 then back to being right. It’s hard to keep up.

Sometimes research is good sometimes it leads to paralysis. Instead of answers you get more questions and still don’t know what to do.

I give up.

Any kind of oil will eventually become contaminated with dirt and other matter that it is exposed to. Keeping your knives clean regularly and applying new oil is the best practice. Food grade oil is a better choice if you use it for food and food prep. If you’re not using it for food then it doesn’t matter so much as long as you remember to wash and clean them if you happen to find an Apple you want to slice and eat. Common sense plays a big part of the issue and knowing safe practices. Do you wash and clean your dinner ware before using them or do you just wipe them on your jeans before eating with them?

Personally after he said it won't go rancid I wanted to quote another line from that movie. But felt that would be for w&c

I recently grabbed an old bottle of olive oil to make a batch of bread dip to go with my lasagna and it Had gone rancid in taste with no tell tail smell so Zieg your blade lube could be rancid without your knowledge unless you were to taste test your knives . 500ml of Olive oil cost about 12 bucks, the same amount of Mineral 0il cost 5 bucks and will last you forever and it won't impart any unpleasant taste to your knives plus if your in a ''Bind'' you can also use it to get the trains rolling if you catch my drift ;).

Plant based oils can go rancid but not mineral oil. But on a knife, lots of people say olive oil is not a problem. But don't use linseed oil, because its oxidation causes it to polymerize, hence it's value as a wood sealant, but it will gum up a knife's pivot.

Boker sells a nice needle oiler I've been using successfully for a few years.

The base oil in the boker oil is, mineral oil. I'm not sure what other additional additives if any are in it. I liked the applicator overall.

For a while it was hard to find. Looks like they have a 2.0 version now and it's completely food safe too. Its probably just mineral oil. For the price it would seem like your just paying for the needle applicator which can be had for cheaper on Amazon or eBay. But I guess it's convenient, as it's a complete package and filled for you.

First I probably don't oil my knives often enough. Secondly after years of searching for the perfect knife lube I went back a few years ago to what I used as a kid for my knives. Just plain old 3 in 1 oil.

I've been using the wife's sewing machine oil for years.......
If it can keep a sewing machine going, I figure it will work on my knife pivot. Don't really care what it consists of........
