This is not a really exciting story; it is more of story of nothing happening.

Yesterday I was taking the bus to the university, when a man got on. He was wearing a rather sizeable fixed blade knife, right in the open, outside of all outerwear.
It looked to be a generic, cord-wrapped handle, one of those knives that costs $30 at most. About a 5-6 inch blade. Cheep Cordura (or similar looking material) sheath, no retention strap.

The interesting thing was no one cared at all.
The driver did not care.
The other passengers did not care.
The foreign girl he sat down beside who definitely saw the knife did not care.

Now sure, he was doing nothing odd, but it flies in the face of all those stories of people freaking out about knives in public, especially in urban areas.

I like hearing stories like that.

That's been my experience here as well in San Diego, California. I openly carry a 10+ inch fixed-blade all over the place, have done so for many years, and no one has ever freaked out, or complained, or said a negative word about it, or asked me to leave their establishment. And none of the cops I have crossed paths with have ever said a negative word about any fixed-blade I was carrying.

Every once in awhile I spot someone openly carrying a fixed-blade in public, a restaurant, or a grocery store, or Walmart, etc, and I never see anyone react to it, much less freak out.

Being able to exercise ones lawful right to carry the knife they want to carry is a great thing. It's certainly a freedom I enjoy.

im up here in riverside and have noticed knives in brown leather sheaths or knifes in sheaths like moras get much friendlier attention than a "tactical" black sheath with a black handled fixed blade

It's just not to that point yet. Give it time....

I'd look at someone with a 10" fixed blade on their hip in the city the same way I'd look at someone wearing hip waders, snakeproof gaiters, or tree climbing spurs.

That look would be "that's weird".

Canada is weird.

Zero

We do our best. :D

I like hearing stories like that.

Me too.

That's why us Knuts have to carry those knives; remind people that it's an option.

Yet no one did... ;)

I carry a 10 inch fixed blade open on my belt along with a 7.5 inch fixed blade right at the belt buckle whenever I'm in the city. If you or anyone else finds that odd, it doesn't really matter, I want to carry them and it's all legal.

Great story OP.

I am in So Cal and people open carry fixed blades all the time, totally legal and people just ignore it or give it a look and kinda shake their head.

I was in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and (homeless scene) people had Bowie knives and big sticks they walked around with, one man wore a kilt and open carried a revolver. One man had a sword in a playground, someone who told me about it was looking for an excuse to get violent against the sword carrying man so he didn't hurt the children.

Been carrying a 4-6"blade everywhere I go for the last 8 years. I've never had anyone freak out at the sight of my displayed blade.

I carry a 4" fixed blade for my edc and occasionally (if a lion or bear is showing tracks near the house) a 44mag black hawk... mostly people just ask what I'm carrying out of honest curiosity... but then again it is Montana

... if not looking like he just got in from the back country on horseback I'd give a guy with a 10" fixed blade a curios look too...

ten inch overall not really ten inch blade would be different

People don't notice the 6 inch fixed blade along with the buck 419 on my belt, as its common for people to belt up a knife or two in these parts. More often than not people look up at my beard before the knives on my belt.

I spotted a young crust punk wearing a Buck 119 on his belt in our Main library about 10 years ago. Nobody seemed to notice him using the computers with a large sheath knife on his belt.

Never seen fixed blades around the Metro Vancouver area but plenty of pocket knives clipped to pockets,in sheaths, and on backpacks while using public transit.

Then again, from what I've read in the Vancouver Province, the #20 Victoria bus has plenty of nefarious types riding that route. As the reporter wrote a guy that boarded the bus with a fixed blade in plain view and nobody batted an eye, hobo types consumption of alcohol in public,to the trading of beers for marjianna.

Shooot...here in Texas you ain't one of us unless you have at least a gun or knife strapped to ya.. (said in a very country voice) lol

Actually, when I was younger I had no less than 6 types of blades on me at all times. Even talked to a cop with a buck 119 on me and he never bated an eye.
I have also gotten out of a ticket because I had a BM nivarius (spelling) on me and the cop was a knife Nutt as well

I once wore a Busse Satin Jack on my hip in a Spec Ops sheath to Kroger. It was plainly visible. I was on my way to do some outdoors stuff with my cousin. Nobody cared, not even the special duty police officer who did, at least, look me up and down a time or two.

Where abouts in canada are you i live and study in manitoba and people give me dirty looks like crazy if I pull out even the most mundane of folding knives.
