Knife or Flashlight?

I know this is a knife forum, but which do you find more useful, a knife or a flashlight?
Since I am asleep most of the night, I would say a knife. I carry a Charge Tti (which I guess is a bit more than a knife) and I have a Surefire E1L Outdoorsman (which needs batteries :o)
So tell us what you think and what you carry.

I use a knife much more than a flashlight but a knife is a poor substitute when a light is needed so I usually carry both. Time of day also predicates whether I carry a light.

If I could only carry one, it would be a flashlight. Given the choice between not being able to see, or not being able to cut, I'll take the latter. If you can see in the dark, you can find anything else you may need.

Plus, my first obsession was flashlights, so that may explain my thought process as well.

A cell phone can serve as an emergency flashlight, so that supports the knife-only argument.

Fortunately, I can carry whatever I dang well please.

its good to have both. i think you will use a knife more than a flashlight, but when you need need to use a flashlight it will usually be for a more important task inmop. i cut open packages and things like that everday with my knife, and hardly ever use the light. however, last week we had a power outage for a few hours and boy was i glad to have the flashlight. it made my life so much easier, everything was pitch black. both a decent knife and a decent flashlight can be had for good prices, its really good to have both.

Need both, and usually a Skeletool, as well.

Day to day? I use my knife CONSIDERABLY more than my lights. I guess my mentality here is that a flashlight is only useful in the dark, and the knife is useful anytime. And typically, it's not pitch-black enough that I can't at least see a little, be it with moonlight, or ambient light in an urban environment. Without a knife, however, you're limited in a lot of tasks. I dunno. I agree with the statement that both are useful, and I can't imagine a situation where I would only be allowed to choose one. Though I'm sure someone will come up with something ridiculous....

Of course you could cover all the bases (and the outfield) in one fell swoop like this gent:

i usually have both on me. on my keychain i have this little 1led light that isnt really a flashlight but it provides a little light to see where im walking if i need it. if i dont have my keys ill have my phone on me which i can use. i have aknife on me 90% of the time too.

i'd say i use them about the same, but i think it'd be worse to not have a knife and want one, than not have a flashlight and want one.

Wouldn't want to choose between the two. I consider both of these, bare minimum EDC. Probably use the knife more, but I've had many times when I've needed a light, and some of those times were during daylight hours.

The knife is more useful for me. Most of the time im in an urban enviroment where there is enough ambient light to get by. And thankfully we dont suffer from poweroutages where i live. I have lived a place where there were regular poweroutages and in such a place a flashlight is an absolute must! Its amazing how dark it can get in a city, when theres no power at all!

I use my knife several times a day, cutting fruit, opening boxes, slicing a pizza, ripping sportstape up, etc. A good knife sees alot of action in the course of a day.

That being said, at work im currently using a Surefire 6P with a Malkoff M61 drop-in coupled with a Boker Plus Ekskalibur I (soon to be replaced with the satin Pohl force Bravo I).

Off work i use the Surefire E1B Backup (great light!) and a SAK of some sorts.

I was thinking about my answer and came up with an ironic thought.

If I were blind, I would never need a light.

Considering the situation, I would hate to be without either a light or a knife. This question is like asking would you rather loose your eyes or your hands?

Ouch! My brain hurts!

I use my EDC flashlight (currently a Ra high CRI clicky) more than my EDC knives (lately a Spyderco PPT and medium Case stockman). Most of the flashlight use is actually indoors during the day: checking computer wires behind a desk, looking in an unlit closet, finding a pan in a dark cupboard, etc.. They both get used every day though, so it would be hard to say which one is more handy.

I get out of work at 4am, so I use my flashlight (itp c7) 5 to 6 days a week. I usually use my knife everyday, but not necessarily. I always carry both and sometimes have a LM Wave with me too.

I think a knife is more usefull. I like cutting things and use knives more than flashlights, I dont even use flashlights at night when I go camping so I might be biased because of that.
