Knife or Flashlight?

i have carried a serious light for about a year now, fenix L2T. it is great. i dont know if i will be in a dark room or not and need light so it is a good thing to carry. with flashlight technology being what it is today you can buy a very small, very bright light for an insanely low price.

I don't find one to be more useful then the other.

You can't open a box with a light, and you can't light up a room with a knife.

So just carry both and your good to go.

I EDC either a Nitecore D10 or a Nitecore defender infinity.

The last few months it's been the defender.

I EDC an EX10 or iTP A3 but gotta say would pick a knife over a flashlight. Still most EDC lights are so small and bright I can take both a flashlight and a knife.

Kind of hard to open a box or cut an apple with a flashlight

Kind of hard to open a box you cannot find or properly identify because it is too dark.

I carry both. At least one of each in a pocket plus one of each on my keychain.

Pocket: 4Sevens Quark 123^2 Tactical R5; Emerson CQC-8
Keychain: iTP A3 EOS Upgrade; Leatherman Squirt P4

I use a knife everyday. I have went weeks and months without using a flashlight.......... Both are essential tools when you need them though !!!

Being a white collar bloke, I carry a 4sevens prion in my shirt pocket and a benchmade 940 clip removed in my pocket. A flashlight is handier to an old set of eyes then you might think, ie seeing the back of desk drawers, finding the stuff I or a client who was in my office just dropped under the chair/desk etc. My knife is used for envelopes and sharpening my pencil and for food slicing at lunch sometimes.

I use both almost every day, flashlight a bit more often since I work nights. Always carry at least two lights and one, usually two knives...

If I could only carry one, it would be a flashlight. Given the choice between not being able to see, or not being able to cut, I'll take the latter. If you can see in the dark, you can find anything else you may need.

Plus, my first obsession was flashlights, so that may explain my thought process as well.

A cell phone can serve as an emergency flashlight, so that supports the knife-only argument.

Fortunately, I can carry whatever I dang well please.

Yeah, thanks for that link in another thread, I now need to make a Mag85 and I think I want to get a 4sevens clip flashlight. :D

even if somebody may ask, I keep and use my light if necessary without any problem
it's no strange thing for me, one may get scared at once but hey it's just light :D, what can they do?
a knife or small slippei is always with me no matter what

oh and the SwissTool too (or a spirit)

Just a sec...lemme check...yup, this is a knife forum all right, so I think I'll choose a knife over a flashlight. ;)

I use a knife countless times during the day and at night, all the light I need comes from my flat-screen.

You don't get out much, huh? ;) :p :D

Still, THIS IS a knife forum. So to some of us the question seems a little odd. :)

Like coming here and asking: What do you like more, knives or bicycle helmets?

And getting replys like: Well a knife wouldn't protect your head very well in a crash now would it, so I'd have to say helmet.

Then someone would chime in with; +1  I don't so much as go to the bathroom without my helmet!

...It just strikes me as kind of funny is all. -Again, I do own pocket lights, and they can be helpfull on occasion, but I use knives multiple times a day where as I may find a use for a flashlight once every month or so. I don't find I need them much in the city because there are enough other light sources around, and not at all during the day.

As for "getting out" in the wilderness, I'd MUCH rather be without a light than without a knife. I can make a fire, and a torch with just a knife, and there is usually enough moon and starlight out for my eyes to adjust pretty well anyway.

Pluss I just think knives are cooler and more fun, as well as more usefull "to me"

Like coming here and asking: What do you like more, knives or Toilet paper?

Then someone would chime in with; I don't so much as go to the bathroom without my toilet paper! I tried using my knife once... and you do not want to hear how that turned out...

I adjusted that a bit...

Why is everybody missing my point? a knife and a flashlight are two completely different tools. neither is more or less important than the other and both have specific uses.

I carry one flashlight on my key chain and sometimes another light if i'm working on site. maratac AAA on they keys and a quark AA^2 tactical when i'm working on site.

I won't go for a long hike or camping without my Fallkniven F1, or my Surefire Saint Minimus headlamp and my Surefire G2 LED light.

I'm with ya.
I have multiple interests and hobbies that often overlap/intersect.
I wouldn't want to give up my knives, flashlights, multitools, shop tools, firearms, computers, photo equip., etc. as all are very useful and enjoyable tools; and would find it difficult to do without any one of them.

The OP may seem odd to some being on a knife forum, but I do know that the collector/accumulator sickness does spill over into flashlights and other gadgetry. But, this thread is rather refreshing after days on end of boring knife recommendations...many of which seem to be suspect requests. Oh yeah, I'll take the knife. I can sit and do nothing (or go to bed) if I can't see.
