Hello,

I will have a business trip to the USA coming Saturday. I will stay all together for two weeks in Dallas and in Milwaukee , so I will have a little bit time left for having a look around.:)

Obviously, I need a few souvenirs!

Could anybody recommend good knife shops or outdoor shops in Dallas, Milwaukee or Chicago?

Many thanks in advance for your answers!

Best regards,

tuxtex

Tuxtex,

Greetings from Texas. There is no shortage of outdoor stores in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. That been said, there are 3 places you definitely want to hit.

Bass Pro Shop - just 10 minutes north of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
2501 Bass Pro Drive, Grapevine, TX 76051
phone (972) 724-2018

Cabelas - in north Fort Worth (about 45 minutes from Dallas)
12901 Cabela Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76177
Phone: 817-337-2400

House of Blades - in west Fort Worth (about 1 hour from Dallas)
6451 N.W. Loop 820, Fort Worth, TX, 76135
Phone (817) 237-7721

Both Cabelas and Bass Pro Shop are massive outdoor super-stores. The decor and ambiance alone in both is worth the trip (specially Cabelas). Both have very decent knife sections. For an knives/outdoors enthusiast, walking into either one is like letting a child loose in a toy store. Schedule no less than a whole afternoon to see each store. House of Blades is basically a knife enthusiast's wet dream. Most likely you'll find anything you are looking for, but not cheap. But even if you don't buy anything, you can't come to the Dallas/Fort Worth area and not visit one of the world's largest knives stores.

In Chicago proper, there is a place called Northwestern Cutlery on the edge of Downtown (810 W Lake Street)

They cater mainly to professional and serious chefs and cooks, but they have an okay to excellent selection of pocket, fixed blade and "tactical" knives as well.

If you are going to be in the outer northwestern suburbs of Chicago, I recommend Cabela's without reservation.

And if in the Milwaukee area, find a Gander Mountain - these are also in a couple of the outer Chicago southern and western suburbs as well.

If you happen to be flying thru Houston on your way to Dallas or Chicago, eat at Papadeaux. About the best airport restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Not cheap, but a good meal, excellent bar.

And in Milwaukee, eat at the Comet Cafe. Very fun, great food.

You have to go to Bass Pro Shops near Dallas, they have several indoor fish tanks, and even a pond with trout in it---all inside the store.

House of Blades in Fort Worth has a giant selection, but they charge full price for everything. They also have a small store in the Ft. Worth Stockyards.

Pappadeaux is an excellent seafood restaurant. There are 3 in Dallas

3520 Oak Lawn Avenue, Dallas - (214) 521-4700

10428 Lombardy Lane, Dallas - (214) 358-1912

18349 Dallas Parkway, Dallas - (972) 447-9616

You may want to look up the Cabelas Fort Worth store in the web. I apologize if I appear insistent, but I can't emphasize enough how impressive this store is. In addition to more outdoors gear and apparel than you can imagine, they have inside the store an African Savannah diorama (which includes an elephant among other mounted stuffed animals), a four-seasons American mountain animals diorama (on a two-story-high mountain), a Texas animal hall (in recreations of natural habitat), and an aquarium. In the restaurant you can enjoy (among other things) a wild-boar or bison sandwich, or a bison or venison bratwurst.

man i miss the food in TX:( Silver Dollar Gun & Pawn they use to carry every model of Randall knife not sure if they still do.

Welcome to Texas. The suggestions given are excellent. Bass Pro and Cabellas are outstanding and the House of Blades is good. Rays gun shop is a neat place to visit but not in the best neighborhood.

Again, thank you all very much for your help!

I'm planning to have a look at Cabela' s and the House of Blades in Fort Worth on Sunday (I will arrive on Saturday 18:30 and have a day off on Sunday). Fortunately, both shops have open on Sunday!:)

Off topic: Has anybody a recommendation for a cheap car rental in Dallas? I will stay in the Gaylord (very strange name by the way ...) hotel in Dallas downtown and I need a car to go to Fort Worth.

Again off topic: Last year I was in San Antonio, and Nigel's Gun shop had a very nice knife department. I lost a lot of bucks for a a few nice Knifes of Alaska knives .

Best regards,

The Gaylord is an outstanding resort; enjoy it. And I agree, the name is kind of weird. As for a car, if it wasn't Sunday I would offer to drive you around. As a minister, Sunday is my busy day. Sorry. :o

I'm assuming that you only want a car for the day. The Gaylord has car rental on-site through Hertz, but its the most expensive in the area ($60/day economy car). Budget is a cheaper option ($37/day economy car) and is close to the resort (1.6 miles). Consider looking through Travelocity, Hotwire or Orbitz and search by address. The address to the hotel is 1501 Gaylord Trail, grapevine, TX 76051.

You may need to double-check your information: The Gaylord hotel is nowhere near downtown Dallas, it's about 25 miles away, north of the big airport.

You are right... Fortunately, the Bass-Pro-Shop is around the corner!

Finally, I was not able to go to Fort Wort, but I was in the Bass Pro and here near to Milwaukee in the Cabela´s in Germantown.

Both are impressive, but I would rate the Cabela´s over the Bass Pro.

Having said this, there are working wonderful people in both shops giving me outstanding support!

I rellay have to say, that I feel very well here in the USA and I like this country even more like before!

Thank you to all!
