hey knife nuts out there i ordered and sent back a GERBER SLG from Knife Outlet, i got it on the 2-6 and nextday aired back because it was not as great as they said it was and today they sent it back and it looked like someone had jumped up and down on it with a note that says "box is in bad shape and knive has been carried!!!!THAT IS THE LAST DAMN THING I'LL ORDER FROM THOSE JERKS!!!!!

I once returned a knife to the Knife Outlet because it simply didn't meet my tastes and expectations and they refunded my money politely. If the package was damaged in transit you might want to take it up with the courier. If the box was opened and "inspected" during transit it might well have been damaged.

Todd,

Have you tried calling and talking to Fred? He has been very helpful in my dealings with him. You may want talk to him before posting negatively about this situation. UPS could very well be the culprit.

Later,
Chris

Todd,

No surprise to see you here. We can only accept returns when the product returned is in saleable condition. Our website says so and it's a fairly common practice. The knife you returned had two problems. The first was that you sent it in an envelope and the packaging was destroyed. The second was that the pocket clip showed paint wear indicating carry of the knife. If I were to ship the knife to someone else they would be rightfully upset. I had two choices. I could have refunded your money and thrown the knife away or I could have returned it to you. I did the latter. Now I will go refund your money so you will have both the knife and the money. You can trash us all you want but it won't be because we were unfair or unreasonable. It will only be because, like so many others in this forum, it pleases you to do so. Take care.

Todd,

I thought I would be able to locate you in our system knowing only your first name and city but I can't. If you'll email your last name, I'll get the refund underway. You can pitch the knife or give it away to someone since you don't like it. Don't send it here, though, because we have no use for it. Take care.

Fred you're crazy. I wouldn't send him a refund for the following reasons: 1) the kind of person he is for starting this thread 2)he sent it to you in an envelope
eek.gif
??? Well DUH. 3)he used it for awhile.

Why should you cough up the dough and the knife on this one?

I'm glad I don't sell knives on the internet.

Thanks, Hoodoo, it's one of the prices one has to pay for being in an industry that has this kind of forum available. I think I'm better off taking the high road. We'll survive a few dollars. Better that than being accused of unfairness. Take care.

While you're here, Fred, could you give us some advice on how to package knives for shipping? Was that just a plain paper envelope or one of those thick padded ones or one of those with the bubblewrap lining or what? Is a padded envelope good enough?

Sure, cougar.

You don't want to think of the box that comes with the knife in it as packaging material. You want to protect it. We use a series of small corrugated cartons the smallest of which is 4" x 6" x 8". They cost us 25 cents and up but we buy them by the 1000's. We wrap the knife and the box it came in with enough bubble wrap to fill the box and then tape it up. Envelopes aren't any good because they don't protect the merchandise from being crushed by other boxes in the same UPS tote or mail bag or whatever. Even padded envelopes are not good. You really need to use a stiff box. For those who get a package from us and want to return it, they should just use the same packaging materials we used to get it to them and just change the label. We normally get about 3 returns per day (that's really tiny since we ship 100's of knives per day.) We have had to send back two returned shipments so far this year. The one that is the subject of this thread and another one which came in without any of the original packaging at all-just two loose knives in a box. Last year I doubt we sent back more than a half dozen so most of the returns arrive in pristine saleable condition. Some are defective, of course, and they make their way back to the manufacturer. Bottom line, just use the same packaging in which the product arrived to you. Hope that helps.

Every time I receive a knife I ordered, I put the "packing box" in a corner of the basement where I have a stack of all different sized boxes for shipping "whoknowswhat" back for service.`I try to keep my "stash" hidden from the wife, but she always finds my boxes.

"What're you going to do with all these boxes and bubble wrap"?

from what I can see here and what I know of fred......it looks like he is NOT the one that sucks in this transaction and the original poster needs to forward an apology, like NOW!

He gets the knife & a refund?!?!?

To KO,
I fully understand why you have chosen to take this particular route with this particular individual. It's just a shame that he had to post the way he did. You have definately shown, to all that read this thread, that you are definately operating on a very high level regarding your customer service. You had, IMHO, no obligation to take back this knife or even refund the money. Unfortunately, you're "rep" was on the line and you, once again IMHO, have gone above what was required of you to protect your "rep".

Todd,
Please refrain, in the future, from using this forum as a place to bash legitimate business owners. I say this because it is clearly evident that you deserve NO refund since you returned the knife in a sub-standard shipping container to which it arrived damaged. That, in and of itself, should be enough reason to negate any claims that you may have been eligible for in reagrads to a warranty.
May I suggest, the next time that you have a problem, please think it through before posting here. I am not trying to bash you. It is just that I like this forum for legitimate complaints and I don't like to see it abused.
I just think that you crossed the line with this one.

Why is it that I knew when I clicked on this thread, it would be from some Yahoo with only a smattering of posts? They think that if they come on here and trash what is to them a faceless company, that we are all going to say-"Thanks for the warning man, do you want to hang out sometime?" Perhaps you could also post an apology on this thread so that when people do a search of Knife Outlet, they can see what you accomplished. Making a seperate apology thread does nothing for new customers trying to find out about Knife Outlet.

Fred, once again, you have shown why you have so many people who are willing to jump in and defend you. It's a shame you have to take it in the shorts for some wannabee KnifeKnutt.

FWIW, I think Todd has learned his lesson and we should move on. He personally emailed me (and the original respondants to this post) to admit his fault and then started another thread to admit his fault publicly. I think he was wrong to post this topic in the first place, but it is now a moot point. He has hopefully learned from his mistake.

Take care,
Chris

I came to this late and maybe I should have held my guns, but this type of thing really pushes my buttons.

I've never ordered from KO before, but to be honest I'm really considering it. Fred's replies to numerous trolls here have convinced me he's a class act.

Don't let 'em grind you down, Fred. You're making potential customers just for being yourself.
