I find it is a nice balance between inexpensive, easy to grind, durable, etc. And if the holes are drilled with a brad-point bit, the are clean and can be transferred very well. Although I don't really make high numbers of one pattern, anyway.
I also like that I can get a hands-on feel for roughly what a pattern will be like once it is a finished knife (minus the handle).
