Knife Pet Peeves

Dunno what makes you call that 'virtue signaling', aside from maybe some acute early onset dementia, but they mark it 'Earth' to indicate the intended lifespan of the company, i.e. beyond that of our time living on this rock alone. It's got nothing to do with 'signaling' anything, much less about the 'virtues' of Spyderco as a company. It's like Babe Ruth pointing beyond the stands before taking his batting stance, not whatever goblin you imagine to be lurking in the stamp

That makes no sense at all, even if(?) they claim that as a reason. Where  else but on Earth would those knifes be made? Sophomoric.

You're reading too much into this. Its probably just a quirky little joke. You're the one here using words like sophomoric & vacuous.

Did you (and N NG VI ) take note of the thread title, PET PEEVES? Try looking up the meaning of that. This thread is about insignificant little irritations in a mostly humorous manner, by definition of the term. You are using my ironic addition to that topic for an ad hominem slight. Bore off.

Chill out, yo. You're obviously looking for a fight. I think a hobby site is the wrong place to do it.

Not looking for a fight. Did I ever (since 1998)? Just correcting some foolish replies, for the record. What's it to you anyway?

I wouldn't know, but it sure sounds like you are, calling folks sophomoric and telling them to bore off. As to what it is to me, just trying to keep the peace. Plus I'm not a fan of name calling.

I particularly liked the Ti-Lite model, so I ordered it. When I received the knife it had a faulty lock. I found an older model with a titanium handle in a store, I bought it and after a while the lock broke. The next three were also defective, so I will no longer buy any Cold Steel products.
Got you grumpy I can't say I blame you there!
I'd be pissed off although I don't plan on buying any more Cold steel knives as well

This may not be popular but my pet peeves are broken ken onion speedsafe torsion bars. They say it's good for 10,000 licks but it don't that take that many licks to get to the center of a Tootsie roll Tootsie Pop. Said the wise old owl!

Less angry at the knife than I am at the law, but when knives are 3.6 inches long in blade, it ruins it for me. Colorado law and a bunch of other states like Nebraska require you to only carry a 3.5 inch blade maximum, otherwise it's against the law... Which means a large sebenza or inkosi or umnumzaan is off the table for me legally.

Oh this is fun...

Mirror polished blades
Junky pocket clips
Sharp edges and corners
Heavy All metal folders
Frame lock

Perhaps review the timeline of comments then, where I was first insulted with "early onset dementia"...not exactly a compliment, eh? If you are a self-appointed peace-keeper (do you think the forum moderators are beneath you?), start there, not with me.

Guess some Sp****co fans here don't take kindly to even a whiff of satirical criticism of their favored brand. Meh!

Yoroi means 'armor', Dooshi means 'go though'.

The overbuilt features of the Yoroi Dooshi (thick spine, well-supported point) are the basis for many contemporary tanto-style knives.

On a visit to Japan I stayed in Okitsu, one of the 53 ststions on the Tokaido highway that was immortalized by Hiroshige in a series of woodblock prints.. The village samurai there surrendered and cut off his topknot when Tokugawa Ieyasu rode in with 5,000 mounted warriors. The samurai's wife convinced him to open an inn (the Miniguchi-ya), which has been family run for over 400 years.

Yoroi Dooshi 鎧通し can be translated as Going through Armor, Penetrating Armor, Passing through Armor, Piercing Armor. All of which are accurate as there is no singular "precise" translation. 信じて下さい、日本人ですから。 :) Plus I am an admin on Subtitles.org.

I presume that "contemporary tanto-styled knives" refers to the American tanto-styled knives made popular predominantly by Cold Steel backin 1981. And as you say, a thick spine and solid well supported tip is indeed a common characeristic. However, I have never seen any maker advertise their tanto-styled knife as being based on the Yoroi Dooshi. Maybe there are and I just haven't seen it.

The Okitsu-juku in Shizuoka is number 17 of Hiroshige's 53 Toukaidou prints. I had no idea it was still in operation. And I do wonder who this village samurai was.

The samurai was Miniguchi. I stayed in the Miniguchi-ya, a traditional ryokan with tatami mat floors, communal bath, and supertankers lined up in Yokohama Bay.

Check out Japanese Inn, by Oliver Statler, which documents the history of the inn. The hostess had a well-thumbed copy of Statler's book signed by hundreds of tourists that I added to.

Thanks. Will do.

I struggled with this for years Here in NE. I would buy a Zaan, carry it, panic and sell it. I even had a policeman warn me after a traffic accident once a year or so ago so I gave up. Didn’t say a word about the Glock 19 ( have a permit). Anyway, Im carrying a large Inkosi Insingo now and my measurements say 3.4976 so F them.

Yeah you implied that Spyderco, not my favorite by the way, was some kind of woke commie SJW clownshow because, why, aside from your own inability to imagine a situation where people don't just live on Earth anymore? It was weird merited a weird response.

I've wondered about this. Do the cops carry a tape measure? I don't doubt your story, just wondering how they decide it's too long. This harkens back to the days of cops checking tire tread depth with a dime.
