Knife pet peeves....

KNOCK-OFFS!

Stunning, well-executed designs with blades longer than 3.5" (the irritatingly short municipal legal limit)- this includes several Spydercos, most Emersons, nearly all Striders and Busses, a lot of Benchmades, etc. etc.

Blade play, off-center blades, weak locks, etc. etc. on $100+ production folders.

There's more, but why get riled up? :p :D

I am annoyed if a nice knife is only offered with a black blade or serrated/combo edge. My state (CA) has good knife laws but I wish balisongs and autos were legal. I am also peeved by bad handle to blade ratio.

Beadblasted blades

black blade

Oversized pocketclips

Pocketclips that stick out so much that they snag on things as you walk by. Or the end sticks out so far that it scratches up the interior of your wife's brand new SUV and she rips you a new one when she sees it. Then you try to fix it, but it only get worse. So she rips you another new one.................well.....uh......that about all I want to say about that. :footinmou

My biggest pet peeves:

Liner & frame locks that over-engage when you cut with them. In most cases a press fit stop pin would solve it. This is one of the main reasons I own zero liner locks and one frame lock.

Few/no custom makers putting out user grade tactical lockbacks.

Smaller pet peeves:

Crappy sheaths
Automatic knife laws
Brass liners on slipjoints
Apple polishers
The fact that the SOG Vision only comes part serrated
Blade play
Flicking
Proprietary fasteners
Useless blade grinds
Safety fanatics
Single liners
The statement "My Kydex sheath scratched the blade"

chisel grinds
serrated blades
handles that are to small
crappy gaurds
folders that dont have locks
blades that dont hold an edge well
slick handles
overly expensive knives (which for me is anything over 200)
knives that have no artistic quality
knife laws, all of them.

yeah thats pretty much it.

embargo on sambar stag - when is it going to end, anyway?
good designs on production knives with crappy materials as someone else already mentioned..
When the source animal is no longer endangered.

The Cold Steel Spike one example of excellent design (Barry Dawson) mated to crappy materials. The steel in the last production run of Gerber MK II is of a lower grade than the originals, as another example

Rubber Cross hilts/subhilts on Fighting Knives; the ultra soft kraton on the Cold Steel OSS, and the firmer, but still too soft hilt on the Ontario Frontiersman.

Non Spyderco folders (I am addicted to the SpyderHole)

Slippery stainless steel handles.

Soft blade steels that won't hold an edge.

Poorly made liner locks that don't.

People who ask to use your knife without first telling you they plan on using it as a screwdriver.

People who act shocked one moment because you're carrying...a knife. Then they ask to borrow it so they can use it the next moment.

cpirtle,

I have to admit, I was thinking about the lack of custom "tactical" lockbacks earlier today. I wonder why we dont' see more of them.

I don't mind black blades as much, just because it doesn't bother me if the knife looks like it's used. However, I hate it when a black blade is only offered in combo edge.

Actually, I just can't stand combo edges in general. There are several knives that I would have bought, if it hadn't been for the fact they were only available in combo edge.

Poor factory edges, dull, uneven etc
blade play
blades that develop wobble with the slightest use (dominator)
bad lockup on liner and framelocks
Scratches from the factory, out of the box!
non-user adjustable screws

My only knife pet peeve is blade play---absolutely HATE it, even if there is some play that should be acceptable because of the design.
