Knife pet Peeves.

I also hate those knockoff companies that steal designs or stamp false logos on knives.

Not exactly a Knife peeve, but I hate finding my freshly sharpened, fine kitchen knife/knives banging around in the bottom of the sink or in the dishwasher. I know, I know... If I would wash them and put them away myself....

HA!

Wife and I just had this discussion about the Wusthof set. She chunks 'em in the drawer with the rest of the garbage. We have a block for the knives, but it's apparently invisible to her.

To her credit, she does take special care of the Santoku I got from a friend in Japan.

"special care" defined: she doesn't use it on the granite counter top, she no longer uses it to cut through clamshell product packaging, she lets me wash it.

Pet peeves about knives? Hmm, that's a tough one... I guess I'll say knives that just get more ugly with use as opposed to more beautiful, i.e.: modern materials as opposed to carbon steel and more ol' fashioned, non polymer-based organic fittings.

I hear ya.
My wife tries, but she and my kids just don't give knives with the same care and attention as I do.
I try to get my wife to use and appreciate the good knives, but I constantly find her just using some cheap, dull thing that has been in the drawer for umpteen years. I even bought her some cheap but very functional paring knives (opinels and victorinox) that she could use with reckless abandon...but she keeps using the low qual stuff. Oh, well...

I have a new peeve to add...

I hate pocket clips that end up with a point sticking out at their tip. They are forever snagging on things and scratching up furniture and such. Cucchiara knows how to make a useful pocket clip.

No snagging here! :D

You are so right, Matt Cucchiara DOES know how to make a pocket clip!!

Mine's more of a people pet peeve. People that say a knife is junk because it is designed for useage that differs from how they use a knife. For example, "thin blade knives are junk because they don't chop," or the oposite "thick blade knives are junk because they don't slice well." There are many fine knives in each catagory and just because a knife doesn't fit your style, doesn't mean it is junk.

My pet peeves?

Bad ergonomics. ( Cant stand holding a knife that feels like a lump of coal in my hand... )

Crap edge retention. ( I dont allways carry a shapening stone/stick.)

Over designed/embellished/collector/investment knives that cost the world and get used for nothing else than to brag about to people who dont have them or can not afford them.

I want to see more belt leather sheaths for folders available from the knife manufacturers, and not just pocket clips and synthetic knife pouches.

Knives that do not have ambidextrous reversible pocket clips, but are otherwise awesome. Being a lefty, I miss out on a lot of otherwise rockin' knives, such as the Spyderco Millie. I would buy that thing in a heart beat if it's clip was lefty friendly.

Poor edge geometry-sharpened prybars
Fantasy knives
Mystery steel
Excessive Knife marketing-"Super Ninja Tactical Flesh Cleaver"
People who ask what $400 knife they should use for prying when a $2 crowbar would be ideal.
People who carry knives, but still rip open packages.

yes, i want to keep using my granddads knife. Because every time i hold it, open it, look at it i'm reminded of him and his teachings. I guess todays hormone fed easily led sheeple, plugged into their iShiny this or iShiny that, lacks the capability to understand or enjoy tools and education passed down from their Elders. Instead they look to the Media to inform them of whats the latest and greatest iShiny thing to buy and own, instead of appreciating a well made tool with a lot of history, that a family (you know, FAMILY, those people that raised you?) member gave to them. Used to be a huge HONOR to receive Grandpas knife, nowadays the MeMeMeMe genset has ZERO appreciation and ZERO respect for their elders or any wisdom or tools passed down.....makes me want to :barf: >:(

oh and sorry, but there aint nothing that surpasses SR77 or INFI...... and old carbon steel knives...............still kick butt

Good points.

You are the exception rather than the rule.

My point is that a Seb will not likely be ‘treasured’ by the next generation.
Their laser-photon beam cutter will no doubt be much preferred.

That is, until the battery dies. ;)

Some people just prefer traditional designs. I kind of envy all these people who grew up with relatives that carried knives, as I had to learn on my own. All those early years of learning through mistakes and cuts were good for experience, but without someone to guide me, it took much longer to learn how to properly use a pocket knife. Once I started getting into traditional patterns, I started to really appreciate the simplicity of these designs, from opinels and moras to stockmans and trappers.

I feel disgusted by all those knife ads with big pictures of all types of guns and ammunitions, while those knives themselves have nothing to do with firearms in the picture.

Paying $150 for a knife and having to send it in for lock repair after two weeks opening envelopes and packages. Paying for shipping both ways to have $150 knife work properly = Suck.
